Lactose intolerance can strike anyone but paricuarly someone who's lost the
use of their stomach. It's not a major loss, but it is darned
inconvenient. I had become lactose intolerant before surgery, but I could
tolerate small amounts like ranch dressing. I can't tolerate any
non-cultured products at all now, like milk, ice cream or buttermilk.
However, I don't need those items in my diet, so there is not net loss,
except to my tongue. We really don't absorb much protein or calcium from
them, but we do get a big load of sugar from 'em. Protein is better and
more efficiently absorbed via supplement made with water and calcium is
also better absorbed via calcium citrate supplement. My symptoms are gas,
gas and more gas. Extreme bloating, almost immediately, followed by several
hours of bloated miserable pain that wil not move. If I'm really lucky,
I'll have a few hours of the D to get rid of it, othertwise, I'll slowly
deposit it over time, each time with cramping and misery. And for what? A
bunch of calories with no nutritional benefit that will only bring the
weight back on? I have become a Label Reader Extraordinaire about milk and
sugar products. You are actually very lucky that milk and sugar make you
miserable, as you will get a better wt loss and maintenance!
