Question:
Has Anyone Else Experienced this Kind of "Eating"?

I am one of the lucky ones who has never been hungry since wls. I do my best to eat healthy and go by my surgeon's diet plan. This is embarrassing, but sometimes I get this compulsion/craving to eat the way I did before surgery. I'll get something I'm not supposed to eat like fried chicken, potato chips, or cookies. I'll sit down to eat it and will chew it up and spit it out until I'm done with it. I'm sure it's part of the lost relationship with food, and it's definitely a weird thing to do. Could this harmful to wls results? — [Anonymous] (posted on September 15, 2000)

I think it's hilarious. How come you don't just eat a few bites instead? I mean I eat chips sometimes but in moderation. Good luck to you!

Hi, I am not post op yet, but I can identify with you to an extent. Many times my eating now seems compulsion driven. Just like you are describing now. I am assuming that before the surgery you swallowed what you chewed up? How are you feeling when you are eating like this? Sad? Anxious? Depressesed? Maybe you are eating to stuff down your emotions? Just a thought. Good luck

I have read of others here who have described this pattern. I hope they will respond to you. For me, if I eat ANYTHING fried, I dump. Sugar makes a lot of people dump, but not me personally. And it's not hilarious - if you feel you are in the beginning stages of an eating disorder, please seek assistance from a therapist. Best wishes for your continued success!

I don't think you need to be so concerned...I was told by one patient/support group member that she still has her bag of microwave popcorn nightly, she just has a pile of papertowel she spits it into after she is done. I think you are just missing the delicious tastes of your favorite foods. People forget that part of eating is the wonderful tastes, textures and sense of comfort that comes from eating our favorite foods. If you can no longer swallow the stuff, for whatever reason, I see no reason for you to feel guilty about indulging your desire to taste these things. Relax, be reasonable and listen to your body. You will be just fine.
