Question:
Does Anyone take Protein Supplements via Tablets, Pills, or Capsules?
Are they available in this form? Safe for wls patients? Thanks. — [Deactivated Member] (posted on July 17, 2000)

I have been wondering too about taking protein pills in
addition to protein powder, chicken, etc. I found some protein
pills in a catalogue from a place that sells nothing but
vitamin supplements. I almost ordered them, but thought I'd
wait to see if this is really something that might be good
for me to use in addition to the other ways to get protein.
Does anyone use them or have an answer to this question?

The protein pills that are available today don't provide nearly enough
protein to make them worth the pouch space. Also, the ones I've seen are
not complete protein, so wouldn't do the entire job for us. There are MANY
benefits to the powders & drinks if used carefully and never with milk.
If used with water or sugar free juices, they will go a long way toward
helping to eliminate sugar cravings, they also can coat an irritated
stomach, and of course, will give much needed protein boost to muscles and
hair. They encourage wt loss (if not taken with milk or juice), even
though they are not made to do so. Many find that their shake (or juice
type) totally fulfills their need for a sweet treat. Why not mix with
milk? Skim milk adds 12g of sugar (which keeps your sugar cravings running
at full tilt), and the protein & calcium in it are malabsorbed by all
RNY pts. But no matter which procedure you've had, you will get 100%
benefit of the sugars in milk or orange juice, for example. Sugar is NEVER
malabsorbed. So, the benefit of using a tasty supplement is MORE than just
getting some protein g into your face! It helps round out your program for
wt loss and control of cravings in general, but specifically sugar.
