Question:
When they say "30 grams at a time"....
.. .. of protein, what kind of timeframe does that refer to? I understand we can "only" absorb 30 grams at one time, but is that in half an hour, an hour, half a day? And... I understood we are not absolbing all the protein, even the liquid protein, we eat. Is that true about the liquid protein? — KC C. (posted on June 17, 2000)

You know, no one KNOWS for sure. They sports nutrition mfrs who make the
tastier produts don't know ANYTHING about "us". You see a lot of
products being geared toward over 50g of protein these days. But then, they
are being marketed toward people who already had a high metabolism, then
supercharged it higher. These products haven't been in "our
world" for ages and even our surgeries haven't been around long. Food
protein requires a stomach for digestion and some intestine for absorption.
We're at a disadvantage in both areas, but some absorb more than others.
The liquids are usually pre-digested, so they can skip the stomach part and
arrive into the intestine ready to be absorbed. We absorb more of those,
but how much? Each of us is different. Even two of us with the same BMI,
same doc, same surgery, same day. I always figure 60g of liquid is
minimum. If you get more from bars 'n foods, then great. It can all work
to your advantage.
