Question:
Water

Hi all. I wanted to ask maybe a simple question or not. I don't know. I'm a BIG water drinker anyway so I don't think for me it should be difficult choosing that to drink. My question is this: Why can't you "slam" down water? Or any other drink for that matter? I can take a bottled water and just drink the whole thing in a matter of minutes. If I can't do that anymore, how do I get all my water in during the day? HELP!!!! Thanks!    — [Anonymous] (posted on May 24, 2000)

You have much less room .... Think of it this way, you used to have a quart jar, and you could just pour a full glass of water into it.... no problem, no spillage .... plenty of room! But ... after surgery ..... It is similar to having a babyfood jar with a funnel in it .... so, if you attempt to just pour the glass of water in quickly, it will overflow! You must do it slowly ... take your time, sip water all day long. I am 2 and a half years post op, I have lost over 225 lbs ... I still cannot chug a drink. You can still drink the same amount of water, you just need to take your time doing it, or believe me .... it will hurt and it will have a return trip! Good Luck Mary Anne

I agree with Mary Anne's post below but would add that it was difficult for me to drink fast in the first few months. Now, at 8 months post op I can drink relatively fast. It surprises me too! I cannot "chug" a bottle but about 1/2 is doable. I have had some concern over this and do not understand why this is so. As for the first few months, sip almost constantly. I also drink a lot of water and did before surgery (diet soda's then). I was able to get in my liquids most days. Now I get in far more than the minimum. Good Luck.

I can drink relatively quickly. I take two 16 oz. bottles of water to work every morning and drink them. I drink like a "normal" person, I don't "chug" but I don't take sips either. It seems to run in and out of my tummy very fast. Of course I don't do this within 30 minutes of breakfast (or any meal, for that matter) so I know there's a clear shot through! I can also eat more then 1/2 c. at meals which some cannot - so I guess it depends on your new stomach. Try and see, you may be happy with the results.

It's just hard to slam back 12 oz of water into a 1 oz pouch. You acquire a taste for sipping, eventually. You can eventually drink almost normally, but slamming? Nah, probably not. It's a fair trade, though.
