Question:
I am 12 days post op - I can consume about 8 oz an hour and still be hungry.
I can eat a half of a boiled potato and feel hungry in a little while. I tried some egg salad but need to eat almost 1/2 cup before I am full. What is wrong with me? I had my staples out today and have lost 15 pounds. Plz help!! Open RNY 4-7-00 — Lisa .. (posted on April 19, 2000)

I too, have seemed to be able to "hold" more than one would
expect after my surgery. About 1 week out, I could eat 6oz. yogurt. I
notice IF I eat this much, I usually don't feel very good after, even
though it all stays down. At 6 weeks, I told my doctor I could eat 1/2 cup
at a time easily. The nurse encouraged me to try to eat a titch less than
1/2 cup of food 3-5 times per day. I seem to need to measure my food and
that is all there is to it. Today I had a little cereal for breakfast, and
I've had two 1/2 cups of a meat-veggie goulash I made. I'm not stuffed,
but I also don't feel sick like I do when I eat more. Since my
"fullness sensation" doesn't kick in very fast, and I eat my 1/2
cup pretty easily and quickly, I decided I will just have to MEASURE what I
eat. I plan on staying with 1/2 cup measurements until my doctor says I
can increase it. I don't think anything is wrong with you or I physically.
You might want to limit your food intake to 1/4-1/3cup for awhile. I also
don't suffer the nausea that many do. I lost 1/3 of my weight the first 6
weeks, and now am really beginning to level off. I know if I don't keep
losing, I will need to reduce what I am eating if all else fails. Hang in
there - you are losing. Keep track of what you eat daily and follow your
doctor's rules. Hope this helps. Love,

I had an appointment with my nutritionist yesterday, and she said thet for
the first 7 weeks (which for my surgeon is he pureed stage) it should take
no more than 20-30 minutes to eat a meal. Time yourself. Once you hit
"real" food, it shouldn't be more than 30-45 minutes. Hang in
there!

you had surgery 12 days ago and you are eatting solid foods already? My Dr
put me on liquids for the first 6 weeks. 1 ounce at a time, every 10
minutes or so. I could drink only decaf things and sugar free juices and
jello and sugar free popcycles, clear broth, ect. why are you on solids? I
would talk with your Dr about being hungry and not getting full. Maybe the
staples are broken?
Keep in contact
