Question:
Anyone know of a good Protein Bar?
I'm almost 3 months post-op and in regards to protein, I "don't do" tuna, egg's, cheese & cottage cheese. I'm having trouble eating protein bar's and not dumping with the sugar. I try and pick bar's that have around 10-12 grams of sugar (about the least amount I could find) and I still feel nauseous aftering eating. Any idea's? Thanks! — Peri B. (posted on February 23, 2000)

I have also had trouble getting in enough protein. I can't tolerate milk,
so that cuts out a lot of protein sources. I have found a couple protein
bars that are very low sugar. One is "Met-rx protein plus" that
comes in chocolate and peanut. I have bought them at Walmart and Walgreens
before. Make sure you get "protein plus" kind since the regular
Met-rx bars have lots of sugar. I also use Worldwide sport nutrition's
"pure protein cookies" (which are really just like the protein
bars except they are round)I have tried the coconut and peanut butter. You
can get them from vitalady.com . None of these bars is exactly delicious,
but they are good enough that I don't mind eating one each day. Hope this
helps.

Ok, you don't do (tuna, eggs and cheese) how about chicken.. Swanson
makes in a three pack box.. three cans of white meat chicken fully cooked
and ready to eat.. each can is 3 1/2 oz and is 17 grams of protein.. Or
how about pork? also can get it in a canned spread, same amount of
protein.. The problem with protein bars is.. the calories the lowest
protein bar in calories I could find was Zone Perfect developed by
Barry Sears, Ph. D. it's a all natural bar 14 grams of protein 14 grams
of sugar and 210 calories. Total fat 7% It is loaded with vitamins
though.. Or Promax Bar 20 grams of protein, however, 270 calories
that's more than 1/2 the calories I have in a day (see what I mean) I
never go over 600 calories. If I'm out and skip a meal I keep these in
glove box for protein and energy. I prefer real meat for my protein
or eggs and cheese. So I don't do this often. www.zoneperfect.com
for more details. Try to get your good protein from meat though. If
you can do fish and eggs and cheese well there is always chicken,
turkey, pork or tofu.

Peri,
The MET-RX Protein Plus are pretty good. I like the chocolate
fudge (really good if cold). One 3oz bar has 32 grams protein,
15 grams carbs, only 2 grams sugar, 290 calories, calories
from fat 70. MET-RX also has a new product out called
Source/ONE. One 2.2oz bar (chocolate cheesecake) has 15 grams
protein, 30 grams carbs, 4 grams sugar 12 grans sugar alcohol.
I' not familiar with the concept of sugar alcohol, maybe you know?
This is a chewy bar. I've tried both and didn't get sick
from the sugar and I do dump from sugar. I got the Source/ONE at
KMart for $1.49 each. The PLUS was $2.69.

There are other foods with protein like chicken & yogurt. I drink
protein shakes rather
than do the bars. They taste horrible and there is the dumping issue with
sugar.
With the shake you are also getting your milk aka calcium for strong bones.

Vitalady has some good protein products that are especially designed for
WLS. Try her at vitalady.com. Also at GNC or health clubs, I have found a
protein bar called premier eight with 7 sugars, 31 proteins and 8 carbs.
Good Luck!

Back when I gave a hoot, I liked GNC's Worldwide Sport Nutrition "Pure
Protein" Protein Meal Replacement Sports Bar. One bar was 250
calories, very low in fat, sodium and carbohydrates by comparison to most.
Chocolate Deluxe and White Chocolate Mousse were good; the peanut butter
concoction was too strong in flavor.

Hey Peri,
Worldwide makes a whole bunch of different protein bars that are very low
in sugar. All of worldwide products are low in sugar, carbs and high in
protein. You can get them at GNC. Also the Atkin's bars are pretty good as
far as the sugar content. Have you tried the ultra pure pro pre-made
protein shakes from GNC? My favorite is chocolate and capuccino and it is
35 grahms of protein, 1.5 grahms of fat, and 3 grahms sugar. I have tried
everything and this is the only thing that I find appealing to me. This is
also made by Worldwide. Hope this helps. If you need any more info. you
know that you can always e-mail me.
