Question:
Does heating protein supplement cause it to lose nutrients?
I mix my protein with hot chocolate especially now that it is colder and I heard that heating it makes it lose nutrients--ie., protein, vitamins, etc. Does anyone know for sure? I use Designer protein from GNC. Please help! — Dot W. (posted on December 9, 1999)

Heat does destroy some vitamins, but the protein will not be affected.

I had always heard that heating stuff like that makes it lose the
vitamins. I use designer protein too ( chocolate ) I never thought about
mixing it in hot chocolate before. There is a web site for Designer
Protein. www.designerprotein.com I am sure that they will know the
answer.

Next Nutrtion (Designer) is the one who told me that heating can cause up
to 50% loss of protein integrity. You might want to call the 800# on the
canister to verify. Other brands don't lose quite as much, but they warn
not to "heat" them. Adding them to "coffee put hot"
water might be OK, tho with some loss. Some will separate, some won't.
Also, never mix up a pitcher ahead. Bacteria can grow after as little as 30
minutes, Tupperware, frig or not. But freezing is OK.
