Question:
How much does someone usually lose in the first month? And when do u start feelin ok

Hi, I have my surgery on 11/22 and I'm just wondering what the average person loses in the first month? I'm 5'10 290lbs. I know everyone loses differently but is there an aprox. amount? I mean more then 20? My other Q is I'm supposed to be going away for a couple of nights (for a NHL game) on 12/18 do you think I'll be up for it? That only gives me 27 days to get on my feet. Also what ever would I be eating by then? Still only liquids? I would have no clue what to order...cause we'd be going out to eat and all. I doubt they have just broth there. Any advice or help anyone could give me would be so greatly appreciated!! I need to know wether or not I should sell my tickets and cancel my trip. We'd be driving by the way. Only like a 3hour drive if that makes any difference. Thank you so so much!!!! :)    — [Anonymous] (posted on October 31, 1999)

Hi. What procedure are you having done, and by what method? If you're having an open procedure, recovery would/could be much different than a lap procedure. After 27 days you should be able to travel relatively comfortably, barring any complications of course. I lost about 30 pounds the first month, but we all know that this varies from person to person. As far as what to eat, your doctor will tell you what you'll be eating at that point. I was still on full liquids then, so creamed soups, ice cream, oat meal, cream of wheat, and jello are all things you should be able to get at restaurants. Good luck with your surgery!

When I had my surgery it was the 2nd of Dec and I went away for the new years to a big function what was 3 days and it was 3 hrs away also I did the trip ok and I took a blender and a hot pot and soup and fixed it in my room, it worked out ok and I also had a baby food grinder to take along later so that I could eat off my husbands plate and just grind it up and eat it it really puries the solid food great. If I got tired I would just go to the room and rest or to the car it all depends on how far you are from the hotel. and the weather. Good Luck I hope this helps God Bless Pat in MI

Hi, I started at about the same weight as you (286#) and my first 3 weeks I lost 27 lbs., then I hit my first plateau and slowed down alot. I had lost about 30 lbs at 4 weeks and I am 6 weeks post today and have lost 37 lbs. As far as traveling goes, I drove 4 hours (by myself) to my surgeons office for a follow up appt. at 3 weeks post op and then turned around afterwards and drove the 4 hours home. It was no problem at all. Your diet is very dependent on your Dr's philosophy--mine had me eating everything except spicy foods, gassy vegetables, tomato based stuff, or nuts at 3 weeks. At 4 weeks my diet was unrestricted. Good luck to you!
