Question:
will i be able to take my Dilantin after surgery?

I am on 500 mg Dilantin now and I am afraid that with the malabsorption, it will not work like it should. I have been seizure free for 11 years.    — Sandra K. (posted on July 7, 2005)

You should be asking your doctor that question. He/She should know your medical history better than anyone. Please seek a professionals answer.

my husband wanted a RYN and was told because of his seizure meds he could only have the lapband, for the exact reason you stated malabsorbation. check with your neuroligist. the surgeon usually dont have enough information and was ready to do a RNY on my husband until his neuro said no way. All the Best! Tracey

I have Epilepsy and have not had a grand mal seizure since my surgery on 4/25, which is amazing for me!!! I take Lamictal(as an adjunct) and Keppra both. My neuro thought surgery would be good for me. Heavier people generally require higher doses of medications than normal sized. Don't worry about malabsobtion; as your weight comes down your medication needs will, too. Sometimes I actually feel as if I have taken too much meds. Check out the manufacturer's web site for info on forms of dispensation. I was put on liquid Keppra and child size Lamictal pills. I have to take eight teeny Lamictal pills and 10 cc of Keppra per dosage, but it works. MOST IMPORTANTLY, though check with your neurologist. Dilantin may have a different reaction than Keppra or Lamictal. Maybe you can have your meds changed. Great news, Keppra does not give bad breath or overgrown gums; it actually reverses many of the awful side effects of Dilantin and helps control memory loss problems. No more drool cups for me!!! Thank God for Keppra. One problem though, both Lamictal and Keppra are very expensive. Good luck and God bless. Leica_r P.S. If you have any questions, please let me know. I had no one to ask about their experiences; I will be glad to ATTEMPT to help you.

Sandra...Dilantin comes in a liquid form. I bet you will do fine. You may need to get your level checked more often and your dose may need to be increased. It should be workable. Good luck.
