Question:
I HAD MY SURGERY 3WKS. AGO AND I STILL ONLY HAVE ENOUGH ENERGY TO DO THE BASIC THINGS
AROUND THE HOUSE, AND HAVE TO HAVE NAPS EVERY AFTERNOON WITH MY 2 YR. OLD. I AM TAKING MY VITAMINS AND DRINKING MY PROTEIN SHAKEAND WATER, BUT STILL NOT EATING ALOT. SHOULD THIS CHANGE SOON, I'M TIRED OF ALWAYS BEING TIRED! RACHEL S — RACHEL LOVES SEAN (posted on July 5, 2005)

Rachel,
I know it seems as though you have no energy now. I took naps for the
first 6 weeks after surgery. I would use up all my energy then need to
rejuvenate. You just had major surgery your body needs it's rest just like
it needs the protein and the vitamins. It will level out and you will
begin to feel very energetic and want to keep going. Keep up the good work
and realize that you are still keeping up with a 2 year old too. Good
luck.

You need to give yourself more time. I haven't had the surgery however I
was a nurse and I know with most abdonminal surgerys you need at least 6
weeks before you feel like you can get around. You have a 2 yr old and you
are naturally running after him. You are doing some exercise. Keep up the
good work and you will be fine.

Yes, this is normal You had major surgury & it takes up to 6 weeks to
get your energy back. The eating will get better, & make sure you are
getting enough water & you are taking your vitamins. that will help you
start feeling better soon. Keeping up with a 2 year old is tuff as they
don't understand that Mommy just had major surgury. Hang in There, before
long you will be feeling great & glad you did this.

You are still recovering from the surgery. How is your salt intake,
fluids? If it is a major concern, I'd get a blood test just to make sure
you are not anemic. Paula

It took me 8 weeks to feel even remotely normal.

It took me at least 3 months to feel somewhat normal again, maybe even
longer. For the first 3 months, I found that if I could allow myself 12
hours sleep per night, I could stay awake for 12 hours. If I got less than
that, I would have to nap during the day. The lethargy was the worst
because I felt that I would never be myself again. But, don't worry. It
will come back and you will have even more energy than before. I also
found that walking each day helped me with my energy. Best of luck!

It took me at least 6-8 weeks to have any energy. I was looking after a 7
month old. After 8weeks I noticed I had more energy than ever before. Hang
in there it will get much better soon!

Rachel, I am only 8 days out, but I know EXACTLY what you mean. You hear
all of these people saying how much energy they have and you are wondering
what planet are they on?! #1 - I applaud anyone for even going through
this surgery with a two year old to take care of. #2 - I just had my 1st
post op appt today and asked this same question. She said that I would not
return to my normal self for a good 3 months. That's not to say that I
won't feel better every day that goes by, but 100% can't even be expected
for at least 3 months. I knew this about major surgery since I have had 5
other major surgeries, but my memory has not quite returned yet from all
the medications I was on in the hospital. Good luck to you and don't feel
like the Lone Ranger. When I went to the doctor's today - that was the
farthest I have walked since I got out of the hospital this past Sunday. I
was so proud to not have to use the wheelchair though (even though that
would have been easier).
Best wishes to you, your health, and recovery!

I was weak too, but don't worry, you will feel better,I tried to email
you,I was feeling the same way after surgery,I contacted a high fever and
was back in the hospital for whole 7days, I taught I was going to die,I
prayed and finally the fever stop with all antibotics that was given, now I
am 3 months post surgery today, I am losing weight, I feel better, you will
too, in time, just take it oneday at time, walk as much as you can, it will
help you to be stronger, but don't over do it, it is okay to feel so
crumby, hey write to me, when you are sad and just worried.

your body is still healing. It has been thru major trauma. Go easy on
yourself. The ncreased eneregy does come, but later after you are recovered
and lose a little weight. I am nearly 3 years out and still remember how
drained I felt the first 8 weeks and now, well, I have never felt
physically so good in my life.
