Question:
Anybody donate plasma after WLS?????
I am 14 months post op and I am thinking of donating plasma on Monday at the local blood bank. My question is....Does anyone have any info on the dangers of donating blood or plasma after WLS???? I just had my bloodwork done 2 weeks ago and all my levels were totally perfect so I don't see a problem with donating plasma. Does anyone donate blood or plasma on a regular basis???? Any help or info would be appreciated. Thanks, Roger — Roger C. (posted on May 8, 2005)

Absolutely no problem. I gave blood after a year with no problem. As long
as your blood work is good, your good to go. And there is always such a
shortage of blood. Thanks for doing your part! I can no longer donate as
I had breast cancer last year. Once I hit the 5 year mark I can donate
again!

I have donated RBCP which uses a machine to sepperate the blood and plasma
and it is one whole donation of each done at the same time. I have to up
my iron supplementation for about a week before hand to make sure that my
levels are high enough to give. ............Sherry

I'm not sure which WLS you had; however, I just asked my surgeon this very
question today.
He said no donation of anything for at least 1 year after my weight had
stabilized. He also said as a DSer, we tend to have to watch our iron
carefully, so the answer would prob. be "no."
If you're a RNY or Bander, I'd still call my dr. before deciding to
donate.

I would wait for awhile after you've stopped losing weight.
