Question:
Any post-ops dealing with adult Attention Deficit Disorder?

I'm interested in hearing from post-ops who are dealing with adult ADD. Are you being treated for it? Were you diagnosed as an adult? What led you to seek the diagnosis? Were you diagnosed by your PCP or a mental health professional?
My son (a 2-year RNY post-op) is struggling with some issues that are leading us to believe that he is a sufferer of ADD. Any insights you can provide would be most appreciated.
Thank you so much.
    — Carlita (posted on April 27, 2005)

Ah . . . diagnosed about 18 months ago and I will be 21 months post op on may 6th. Ritlan and Adderall were awful for me but I am now taking Stratterra!! It works great for me, don't know how I survived without out!! My pcp sent me to a psych for a true diagnosis although he knew I did suffer from ADD. Psych have way more experience with this and are very current with the meds. Feel free to email me with anymore questions you might have!!

I was diagnosed bipolar-then with schizoaffective disorder- still mental disorder. Both after surgery. I am being medicated, and I struggle with it all the time as it messes my food plan up. I am coming up on 9 years post op. Deep depression is what sent me to seek help and since we were USN at the time, there was no fee for treatment. It opened up a whole can of worms. Forced me to admit out loud that I had a eating disorder as well and that needed to be addressed. WLS is only the begging. Anyway... I hope that helped... hugs, Cheryl

Hi there. I am 2yrs post op RnY and just got diagnosed with ADD about 3months ago (Im 48urs old). All of my life I knew I was alittle dingy and called skatterbrains frequently as a child. I tried harder than many other normal kids to do tasks...and at times things just never connected when in school and on to adulthood in life with things to do with comprehension and memory recall skills. I can be at a task and just as Im near finishing it I have always had this deep urge to stop and not finish. *weird* But when I first heard about ADD years ago- I figured I couldn't have that cause I was definately NOT hyperactive which is what I thought ADD was all about. After a TV advertisement earlier this year... I went to a site called amenclinic.com took a great online test and it told me I was highly probable Inattentive ADD. With Inattentive its just the opposite from Hyper - its more a couch potato kinda person.... Ta da! With the job I have - I decided meds could possibly allow me to have better job performance so I went to a local doc in my network and he started me on Adderal XR. I have had no problem taking this med and its even helped me control my post op diet better- I dont feel as hungry and crave food just cause its there to eat like I did before taking the med. Its really helped me lots of areas and I wish I had done this years ago! I do notice that the med Adderal XR which is time released works only for about 4-6hrs at most on my new RnY tummy ... so I adjust the time to best fit with my work schedule. Everyone is different but Im just glad I have a name besides "Dingbat or Skatterbrains" to explain why Im kinda duh!!! That website is a great one to check out for anyone wondering if they could also have ADD... check it out! God Bless!
