Question:
traces of blood showed up in urinalysis

during a urinalysis the doctor found traces of blood in my urine. I am scheduled for a ultrasound of my uretha, bladder and kidneys. I am panicked. I don't know what they are looking for. Anyone else suffered from this.    — Sharon S. (posted on April 12, 2005)

It could actually mean nothing. Now, if it were lots of it, 1+, 2+...then that's a problem possibly. It could be as simple as where you were in your menstural cycle. I had that happen a few times when I was battling kidney infections, and the Dr really didn't make much noise about it. The veterinarian that I work for was more concerned than my physician was. Hope that puts you at ease...however, that's just been my experience with this situation...I'm sure others have had different experiences.

Hi Sharon, I had blood show up in my urine @ my pre-op testing. I just had a mild bladder infection. Took antibiotics & surgery went on as scheduled! Judy

Blood in urine usually means one of 3 things. 1-contamination from menstrual flow ..2-bladder or kidney infection ...or 3-kidney stone that is moving and cutting the kidney bed or ureter. Bladder or kidney infections usually cause some discomfort on urination or the urine is dark or cloudy. Moving kidney stones cause PAIN.You may need a CT scan to look for stones.X-rays of the abdomen may not show small stones. Good luck.

I had gallbladder surger about a year ago. Since that time I have had blood show up in my urine just about every time. Recently I went to a urologist, after having an IVP, and he did a cystoscopy. Seems that my urethra was pinched almost shut and he had to restretch it. That was all that he found and I am still having blood in my urine. The urologist doesn't seem concerned at all. My rheumatologist is more concerned, but I'm not being treated for anything at all concerning this. If all tests are negative, then chances are you can live with it. I am.

It's probably a bladder or kidney infection that can be fixed easily with antibiotics--no panicking allowed until you see the doctor! ;) Keep us posted!

Do a Google search for microscopic hematuria. I have this condition, in which traces of blood appear for unknown, usually benign reasons. I've had all the tests you've described, plus a Cystoscopy. All turned out fine. You need to be thoroughly checked, but it's probably nothing serious. Best of luck.
