Question:
I'm thinking of adding a raw egg to my shake.

I make a nice shake with chocolate carb countdown and peanut butter, and I'm considering adding a raw egg to it to enhance the protein content. Is that a crazy, dangerous idea?    — vitoria (posted on March 23, 2005)

Yuck....why not try adding some protein powder instead? You're only going to add about 8gm of protein with the egg - you can do much better with protein powder. Besides, unless those eggs are pasturized, you risk salmonella and who knows what else? Just my opinion!

I'm thinking a little protein powder would do more for you if you really NEED protein supplementation. I easily get in 70- 90 grams a day from my food, which is more than I really need for my height and weight. If you really have a desire for raw egg, use eggbeaters, they are pasturized.

I agree with the other two posters, as well. You might also keep in mind that your body can only absorb 25-30 grams of protein at a time, so check how much you are getting with your shake, before you go adding stuff that might end up being wasted away.

A percentage of eggs like 1 in 10,000 contain salmonella and raw can make you VERY ill:( Something to think about before eating raw eggs...

I can give you a first hand account of how nasty salmonella can be. My son had it as a baby, and all I can say is thank goodness he was still in diapers. I still don't know how he got it. He had chronic diarrhea for months, and developed a lactose intolerance for a long time, too. We had to gradually over many months, re introduce it to his diet. The poor kid was miserable for an entire summer. With the possible bathroom issues that so many of us have to deal with, risking salmonella would not be something I'd chance. By the way though, I seem to remember hearing that salmonella is transmitted on the outside of eggs. Not sure if that is true.

How about Egg Beaters? Same protein count and it's pasturized so zero risk :o)

Personally, Now days, Salmonella is not much of a problem if you buy the eggs in a store. I put raw eggs in shakes and I am 56 and still alive and well. However, I agree that egg beaters or egg starts from Costco is a better option. They have 0 fat and 30 calories per 1/4 cup. I have switched to using them exclusively. I was getting too much fat and cholesterol in my diet. Protein powder is a good idea too. I think your shake sounds yummy!! I love Carb Countdown choc bev. It is awesome!!I often cook my oat bran in one cup of it. hugs Jo

I always buy my eggs in the supermarket. I hope you didn't think this girl from NYC was taking them straight from the chicken coop!!!! I am glad you never had a problem with the salmonella, but boy, after my son's experience, I wouldn't take a chance. It's a funny thing, my mother used to put raw eggs in my chocolate milk when I was young. I used to be a real skinny kid and she tried to fatten me up in those days. Little did Mom know how much fattening would happen. LOL!!!
