Question:
RNY & IVF
I want to know if there is anyone out there who has or knows anyone that had the RNY then underwent IVF? I know you are supposed to be super fertile after losing the weight but that is not my case. I know you are supposed to wait 1 year to 18 months to conceive. By the time I get around to it I will be close to 16 months post op. — rhonni37 (posted on March 22, 2005)

You don't have to wait 1 year to 18 months to conceive a child. I
accidently conceived 4 months post-op and didn't know it until I was 6
months pregnant. I delivered my miracle baby 14 months post op and still
managed to lose 155 pounds from surgery to delivery date. I was 210 when
we conceived and 165 when I delivered. The problems that I had during the
pregnancy was keeping food down and not losing any more weight. I have had
no reprecussions having a baby that early in the process. I had the bypass
to try and have a baby anyway, considering I was told at 24 that I would
never have children because I was fat. Good luck to you. Don't get
discouraged. If you give up trying it will happen on it's own. God will
bless you.

No offense, Billi- but saying if you give up trying it will happen on it's
own to someone who suffers from infertility is like saying just stop eating
and you'll loose weight to someone who is obese. Not only is that NOT
true, it's an offensive and insensitive thing to say. Do you even have any
idea WHAT this woman's infertility issues are? Perhaps she has a
physiological complication...that certainly isn't going to resolve itself.
And, You most CERTAINLY do need to wait one year to 18 months to plan a
pregnancy for the best chances for health for yourself and your baby. It's
not medically advisable to PLAN to be pregnant during rapid weightloss.
Additionally, most fertility doctors won't work with you if you're actively
loosing weight. It's counterproductive to fertility treatments. Having
said all that- IVF is not effected at all by RNY. The only fertility
treatment issue you will face is related to the absorption of medications.
DON'T waste your time, when the time comes, taking oral fertility meds. Go
straight to the injectibles. Discuss this thoroughly with your
Reproductive Endocrinologist who will work with you. Also, make sure they
understand RNY and speak to your surgeon if they don't 'get it'. Good luck
to you in your fertility treatments. I know how you feel.

Good Point Lisa. I had one doc tell me to lose weight and get my sugar
under control. Well I have done that. I still am not preg. I have tubal
issues and dimished egg quantity. I didnt think about the med thing. I
will be doing injectables but my doc is starting me on birth control pills
as soon as I start my period. I wonder how this will work. It is supposed
to suppress ovulation not for actual birth control. That is a good
question to ask. Thanks so much. And Ms. Billi is not the first person
who said to relax and it would happen. Hell, Ive been relaxing for 7 and
half years and it aint happened yet. Again thanks for the comments
