Question:
anyone know anything about the mini gastric bypass surgery?
i've just seen it discussed briefly on another website. i've never even heard of it, and was surprised i've never seen it mentioned here. any response? — newmoon (posted on March 9, 2005)

You dont want to go down that road. Its not mentioned here because its not
reconized as a proper WLS - its was 'peddled' and I do mean peddled by Dr
R in NC at a time when lap was not done. It was a surgery not entended for
wls. Recently a doctor was found to be doing them on patient unknown to
them; there are some that have had it done with no problem, but the surgery
itself can cause MAJOR acid problems. If your looking for quick and
safe... do the lapband...

I am a mini bypass post op. DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON THIS
SITE! THE REASON YOU DO NOT SEE ANY POST OP'S HERE IS BECAUSE THEY ARE
CHASED AWAY BY ALL THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS. IT IS A GREAT PROCEDURE AND IT IS
COVERED BY INSURANCE, EVEN THOUGH MANY PEOPLE HERE SAY IT IS NOT.
If you have any question please feel free to email me.
Thanks,
Bridget

Others here have reported MAJOR acid troubles. my surgeon doesnt do it for
that reason.
<P> Dr R had to open his own hospital or some such after insurance
and other hassles

What exactally is that (mini) I have never heard of that. Can anyone tell
me more? How much is that compared to the (Full) surgery? What is the
differance?
Thanks

If you go to clos.net you can find a picture of one. It is a lot like the
RNY except, rather then use just the top portion of the stomach, ours is
longer and more slender. My doctor descibed it as a magic marker. That is
the shape and size. And rather then completly cut the intestine and attach
it to the new stomach ours is just looped up and attached.
My surgery was done laproscopic. It took 45 minutes. Total cost of the
surgery with hospital, anesthiesia, a years worth of follow up visits, etc
was just under $17,000.
Just be sure to do your research. There are bad surgeons out there. But
isn't there for everything?

So why did you opt to get the mini one instead of the full one? Is there a
specific reason one would go mini instead of full?

When I was a pre-op, I asked my surgeon about it. He said there is a
reason not many Drs. do it, and just one of them was a higher incidence of
ulcers. I am sure some do well with it, but I wasn't willing to add
additional complications to the risk.

I opted for it because my PCP was a Mayo physician. He recommended it
because at the time the Mayo clini was only doing RNY and they we having a
large number of people with complications. He recommended that I go out of
the Mayo network to a surgeon that has very little problems with his post
op patients. My surgeon has actually has a better reputation then the Mayo
clinic. Here was my doctor, a Mayo doctor telling me not to have the
procedure done that they perform because of the complications and to go out
of network. That made up my mind.

That newsweekshowcase link is not a Newsweek story - it is an advertisement
by Dr. Rutledge.
