Question:
RNY procedure details Barix Clinics
Is there a difference in the way Barix Clinics surgeons perform their RNY surgery compared to other bariatric surgeons? Do they bypass less intestine and do they make the pouch bigger? — Kara J. (posted on February 9, 2005)

Hi Kara! I had my surgey at Barix in Langhorne, Pa on 12-2-4. I don't know
that they vary their surgeries from the norm but Dr. Brader did Lap RNY on
me and bypassed quite a bit of intestine so technically I am distal. He
does the amount on a patient by patient basis so this may vary. I do know
that I could return to normal life after two weeks, including picking up my
then 18 month old. As far as the pouch size, he makes all his patients
pouch the size of a hard boiled egg. I was and am extremely impressed with
the Barix program, from pre-surgery to follow up care. I would personally
recommend Dr. Brader to anyone! What Barix are you going to? If you need
anymore information about them, please feel free to email me. Good luck!

I went to Barix and my pouch was made about 1 oz, however as with ALL
procedures the pouch does stretch out a little as time goes on. You can't
survive long term on 1 oz of food at each meal, It works in the losing
mode, but at some point you have to maintain. As far as amount bypassed, I
believe that is on an individual basis. I had about 2 feet bypassed. what I
really liked best was the comprehensive program. So many surgeons only cut
you then you are on your own, Not so at Barix, they have their own
dieticians who know WLS,many support groups, all pateint counselors have
had the procedure themselves. their hospitals only do procedures related
to WLS, and some do reconstructive surgeries to remove excess skin after
the weight loss. At the Belvidere IL hospital for example, recently got a
plastic surgeon on board who is familiar with plastics following massive
weight loss as our needs differ somwhat from the general public. Barix has
sone > 20,000 surgeries, I feel they really know their stuff. My own
surgeon had done >1500 surgeries himself when I had mine 2 years 5
months ago. Not many out there can state a record like that. Another good
thing - THEY handled ALL the insurance stuff, I didn't have to do anything
but show up for my pre surgery tests and be on time the day of surgery,
LOL. Last but not least. MY initail consult was a one on one with the
surgeon, he spent at LEAST 45 minutes talking about the surgery and
potenital complications. NO mass audience seminar. It was individual rather
that 200 people in an auditorium. I appreciated that, and felt I am worth
the individual attention and care.
