Question:
Has anyone had an anastomotic ulcer and if so, what have you done for it?

I had two ulcers at about 11 months post op and ended up in the hospital for three days...eating nothing...because they were concerned that it was going to perforate. Mine were caused by h-pylori so I did the double antibiotics and acid reducer therapy. Unfortunately, it didn't cure all of my problems. I stayed on the protonix for a while (maybe 1-2 months), but it made me hungry all of the time. Then, was told to swich to prilosec. I still hated having to take them every day. It took several months to finally wean myself off of them. Now, at almost 2 years, I still have acid/pouch pain issues from time to time and still take prilosec for a couple of days...which seems to keep it under control.

I've had two ulcers. The first was removed surgically and the second was treated. I did not want to have yet another surgery to remove the second ulcer so I searched and tried everything to get it to heal. Here is what I found. I tried every medication over a period of a year. Nexium twice per day was the only thing that helped. I began eating a RAW foods diet w/ only fruit in the mornings. It took one month of the above to be amost completly pain free and another month or so to heal the ulcer. I am currently taking Nexium once per day to maintain. Hope this is what you are looking for. ~~Rebecca

I developed and ulcer took all kinds of meds then finally after 17 months had surgery to remove them. Then Dec. 2004 I went in for an EGD for a possibel stricture and my ulcer is back...Same spot same size everything. I am back on 10ml Carafate 4 times a day and 1 Previcid 2 times a day. No I am not a smoker and I have an appt. to see a Dr. at Vanderbuilt for a 2nd opinion. Let me tell you, MAKE surgery your last option. Its not easy and actually my second surgery was worse than the first. They are also watching my iron levels very closely. You may want to try adn get a second opinion.

MY husband developed an anastomatic ulcer about 3 weeks after surgery. He was scoped, had some debris cleaned away, had to stay overnight in the hospital to make sure the bleeding stopped, and he was on a Protonix drip. When he came home, he had to take Protonix and Carafate for a month. He has been fine since.

I had them often for the first 5 yrs. I took Prilosec 20mg 4X per day, carrafate whenever my pouch was empty and then graduated to 40mg X 4. Eventually, I was revised (due to SLD) and have not had ulcers since.
