Question:
Has anyone trained and completed a marathon after WLS?
I am 10 mo post-op and down 110lbs. I have always had a goal of running a marathon, even before surgery. As I start to ramp-up my training (dr. approved) for the Chicago Marathon in October, I was wondering if anyone out there had any hints/tips on training, nutrition etc. Thanks for any input! -Jennifer — Jennifer M. I have run 3 marathons since my WLS. Check out www.coolrunning.com for
programs and message boards.

First of all, good for you. I ran my first, post op marathon on memorial
day (13mos out). I trained using the Galloway method (you can find lots of
his books in bookstores).
The hardest thing for me was staying well hydrated while not chugging water
like I used to. I found a sugar free, electrolyte replacement on line
called hydrolyte. I also trained around a lake, that allowed me to hide
water bottles at certain points around the 4 mile loop, so I always had
water/hydrolyte around when I was doing the higher miles. (10+). I also
learned to fill my cheeks up with water so I could sip it slowly durning my
run. It looked weird but worked. And I always made sure I was well hydrated
before my run.
Race day, I ran with a small bottle of hydrolyte and alternated that with
the water they offer. Otherwise, they usually only offer gatoraid and if
you dump, that can be a problem.
Finally, you may want to go to a running store (there's one called snails
pace around here). They will watch you run and pick a good shoe for you.
Its a bit pricey, but worth it because it really helps your knees and
ankles.
Wishing you well,
Rachel
