I am 17 months post-op and have been at my goal for two months now. I stand
5'8" and weigh 160 lbs. I make sure everyday that I get from 70 to 90
grams of protein and atleast 1200 calories, give or take. I still eat
protein first, pork my favorate, but I just fix regular meals for me and my
husband, or family when they are over. I still can not chew steak well
enough, so I will fix my husband a steak and me a crab cake with alittle of
his baked potato. I still drink a protein shake in the morning, and once in
awhile I eat a protein bar, if I am on the go, it is better than stopping
at a Carb Heaven Fast food place. I can only eat 3 to 4 oz's of food, and
my favorate is chili with saltine crackers. Shrimp scampi, and crab
stuffed flounder. I love shedded Pork, also, lean ground beef is high in
protein. I eat very little chicken, it is very low in protein. Yesterday,
I had a protein shake in the morning, a hardboiled egg and cheese for
breakfast, for lunch I had a crab cake with brocolli and cheese, for a
snack I had 1/2 a crispy protein bar and about 2 oz's of sunflower seeds,
and for dinner about 2 oz's of shedded pulled pork and 3 french fries,
later that night I had a 1/2 cup of dryers s/f choc chip mint ice cream.
Hope this helps, if you have any questions please email me.

I'm 19 months post op WLS. I do not consume any protein shakes - never
have. I tried several and they made me sick so I decided that I was going
to get my protein from food instead. I try to get as much protein in as
possible but I know there are days that I don't get in 60 grams. But, I
believe that a balanced diet is based on what you eat in a week, not
necessarily each day. By that, I mean that some days I eat nothing but
protein and some days I eat more carbs than I should. Mainly, I listen to
my body and eat whatever I need. I know when I'm low in potassium and I'll
consume as many bananas and kiwis and potatoes as possible to get those
levels up. I sometimes dump or just cannot digest meats so those are the
days that I eat carbs, generally in the form of pasta, in order to get in
enough calories. Some days I can eat 8-10 oz of food at at time. For
example, two days ago, I ate a considerable amount of pork tenderloin for
lunch, along with veggies. I was shocked at how much I ate, actually. I
even had a couple of bites of the dessert offered. However, that evening,
for dinner, I was only able to consume about 1/2 cup of chicken soup. Go
figure! I am a slim size 6 and weigh about 140lbs. at 5'7". I have
maintained my current size/weight for 7 months and I'm very happy where I
am. I don't want to lose and I don't want to gain. The way I've been
eating seems to meet my nutrional needs as my labwork comes out normal
every time I'm checked. If you have any questions, let me know.

Well, I debated answering this as I am 10 yrs out, but eat substantially
the same as I did then. I do 6 protein shakes per day, 4 small meals. For
example, for bfast, i have 1 egg + 1/2 piece toast. It's a large piece of
sourdough round cut in half. For dinner, I had left over angel hair
spaghetti and some tiny pumpernickel type breads. (had parties here this
week, so lots of left overs) One snack was apple slices and a deviled egg
(half). I forget the other, but I think it was maybe 6 Wheat Thins. Wasn't
starving, but I always take my vites with food, food with vites, so no
vites to take? no food. And it forces me to get the tiny meals so I'm not
tempted to eat more volume. Other days, more volume, some days less.

I eat actually what I want to. Somedays I'm hungry some days I'm not. I
do get hooked on different foods - just getting over apples, so its not bad
stuff. I havent eaten any refined sugar and I very much limit fried fish
appetizers, etc. I love potato chips and have to cut myself off. I enjoy
beef, hamburger, and pork sometimes chicken and turkey. I try to limit
carbs, love fresh veggies and fruit. The other day I had to laugh at
myself as I dined on a half of sandwhich made of whole wheat bread, natural
peanut butter and natural (no sugar) apple butter...plus an apple and raw
carrots and water...who would have ever thought too bad I didnt do this
years ago! I would out on the road alot and have learned how to eat at
fast food restaurants. After Christmas---I have to cut back --havent done
that in 2 years (post op 12/23/02) need to lose another 40+ lbs. Happy
holidays!

I'm about 3 1/2 years out, but eat about the same as I did at 18 months.
Basically it boils down to avoiding things made with white flour and white
sugar and eating protein first with meals and as snacks. Amounts vary with
the day, but I generally have 3 small meals and 2 to 3 protein snacks. I
do tend to limit fruit as it makes me hungry, and try to stick with mostly
protein for breakfast (cause it DOESN'T make me hungry).

As you can see we all vary. I can eat anywhere between 3 and 10oz
depending on the day. I generally eat my surgeon's plan still but more of
it. I also can tolerate any food. So I have to be careful of eating too
much junk.
Today I had a shortbread when I woke up (yes I know bad choice lol) and
then at 11am, I ate 3 oz of turkey.
Lunch will be some soup or salad. Don't know about dinner.

I'm almost 3 years out and eat pretty much the same as I did at 18 mo
post-op..perhaps a bit more. For breakfast, 5 out of 7 days, its 2
scrambled eggs with cheese and a dollop of chili, on the weekends, may be
1/2 a bagel with peanut butter or some banana bread. If I ever skip
protein at a meal, I make up for it with a protein shake sometime that same
day. Lunch during the week is either grilled chicken, or shrimp or
turkey/ham over a salad with spinach, carrots, kidney beans etc in there or
1/2 a turkey and bacon on whole grain sandwich. On the weekends, I will
have a fast food sandwich like a grilled chicken, but no fries and can eat
about 1/2 to 3/4. Dinner varies from chili and cheese, to burritos, to
grilled fish/meat/chicken with a veggie, stuffed peppers, a lean cuisine
with just meat and veggie..last night I had homemade beef stew. As to the
amount, it can vary from 1/2 cup to a whole cup depending on the
consistency. I don't do much carbs, like pasta, rice or potato (can't say
the same for sugar, though). Not that I don't like the potato, rice etc,
just fills me too fast. Snacks include popcorn, cookies, miniature candy
bars, licorice, pistachios. As long as I keep up the exercise, I can
maintain, but when I slack off the exercise and don't adjust the snacking,
the pounds find me!

I am 19 mos out (LAP RNY 05-02-03) and find that my eating varies daily,
both the amount and what 'sits' ok. I don't know if others are like that -
I just know that I truly do not know from day to day what I am going to eat
and how much. I have a few tried and true stand bys that always sit ok, as
long as they are well chewed: 1 piece of whole-grain toast with a slice or
two of cheese, a marinated chicken breast, small amount of steak (never the
fat, cooked quickly so fairly red inside), potatoes (small amount), green
beans, lettuce, saltines and, of course, almost any kind of corn syrup
based candy like licorice, gummy bears, etc. Also, chocolate/caramels,
which completely surprised me - this would include Rolos, Snickers, Milk
Duds. But again, small amounts. I don't have a clue anymore the ounces that
I consume. Some meals I can eat a 4 oz chicken breast, but nothing else.
Other meals, I can eat a small amount of lettuce salad (1/2 cup) with some
protein. I don't sweat it - I make sure to get 1-2 protein drinks a day so
that I am sure to be getting enough protein, I take my vitamins for all of
the obvious reasons and try hard to eat several small meals throughout the
day and have a couple of snacks too. Two days before my period, then I can
eat almost virtually all day long. SERIOUSLY. Graze, graze, graze. This
used to drive me crazy - now I try to keep myself somewhat seated in
reality, but it is only 1 or 2 days in the month and then I go back to
eating healthily and on schedule. I try very hard to keep in touch with my
body and to allow the 'natural' cravings to be relatively indulged - as
long as it is not a mental/mind trick. I also do not deny anything about my
food habits. This also means that if I want to snack, I need to be able to
eat in front of others. If I want to snack, but don't want to eat in front
of others, than that tells me that it is a mind game that I am pulling on
myself. Denial made me obese (along with a lot of other factors) and I
won't condone it any longer.
I wish you luck in your journey. Jodie LAP RNY 05-02-03 336/153 as of
today. Maintenance is WONDERFUL!
