Question:
When is the best time to take your vitamins??
My doctor has given me the go ahead to start taking vitamins, he suggested Rexall brand of Prenatal Vitamins as they have 60mg of Iron. When is the best time to take your vitamins? Before bed so they can be absorbed through the body without food or water flushing it out of the pouch? Or in the morning with breakfast? I'm feeling very run down and know I'm missing something and don't want to lose anything out of the vitamin. My doctor does not agree with protein shakes, he says you should be able to get enough from the food you eat....I am 2 months post op. Thanks, Chris N — crslvstd (posted on December 16, 2004)

I don't know if this is right for everyone, but i take my vitamins at
night. I was forgetting too often when I took them in the A.M.. All my
bloodwork has been perfect so it is working for me. I'd ask your Dr..
Good luck!

I take 3 Flinstones vitamins every morning, and 2 Tums Ultra (for the
calcium) every bedtime. Every day of my life I jump start with a protein
shake...

most take one in the morning and one at night (i.e. your taking two per
day).. also you did not mention takng B12 in addition to your vitamins.
and lastly dont forget calcium citrate. Most people take one vitamin in
the am, B12 and the the calcium during the day; since you dont want to take
calcium and iron together, then another vitamin at night.

Don't think the time of day matters a whole lot (although it's much easier
to divide the doses in two) but they should be taken with food for better
absorption.

I take my vitamins before I go to bed also. The reason? I used to get the
WORST case of nausea when I took them in the morning!!! Now, I don't have
any problems.

The best time to take them is the time you'll remember to take them. For
that reason I take my multi (I use adult centrum chewables because I don't
like taking big pills) in the morning right after I run and my calcium in
the evening when I get home from work (I keep the viactiv chews right next
to hubby's oreos so I eat them instead). I also take my sublingual B-12
once a week in the morning - usually Monday morning.
Really my only advice is to find a time/situation that you can remember to
take them every day without fail. I've seen too many people lately posting
about vitamin deficiencies and neuropathy due to not remembering/being able
to take their vitamins, so if you really feel as though you are run down
and might have deficiencies, please request having your labs done.
By the way, I never drank shakes either, my labs are all fine, and I'm
training to run a half marathon in January.

I think I might be on another planet, but I do my vites 5X per day, 6
protein shakes, 4 small meals, no milk, no sugar. I do the iron & C
together and then the other vites are spaced 4X per day with calcium
citrate each time. My surgery was in 1994, lost 150#, which leaves me
between 110-115 at 5'1". I would not take prenatals, viactivs or
Tums, personally.

You really need to take them a few times a day because:
1. Iron and calcium should not be taken at the same time.
2. Calcium citrate is what you need and should be taken with magnesium and
D. (you can buy them with all this included to help with absorbtion)
3. You only absorb so much calcium at a time..like 500 mg. so to get in
1000 - 1500 for premenapausal woman then you need to take it 3 x a day.
Like after each meal.
4. Don't forget your B12, folate..etc..My surgeon gives us trinsicon for
this.
