Question:
A Friend of mine had the Nissan surgery for reflux
She would like to know if it would be possible for her to have the RNY done? Has anyone had this experience? How difficult is it to find a surgeon? thanks! — SJP (posted on November 8, 2004)

Yes, It is a difficult procedure with higher risks but it can be done in
most circumstances, even laparoscopically by a skilled laparoscopic
bariatric surgeon. Conversion to open is higher for safety reasons as
well. Find someone who is well versed in revisional surgery.

Hello. Yes it is possible to have rny surgery after reflux...I speak from
experience because I am one of those patients. My doctor did not do my lap
though -- he wanted to be able to make sure he saw EVERYTHING and said open
was the way to go. I have had no problems with it and am almost 3 months
post op. If she has anymore questions or would like to talk about it, email
me. Take care and good luck!

I had the Nissan in 1999 and then had LAP RNY 2003...my doctor said they
would undo the Nissan to do the LAP RNY and there would be no reason to
"redo" the Nissan...have not had any problems with reflux since
the Nissan and not since the LAP RNY...Rhonda

Thanks for all the info. I let her know that it's possible. The funny
thing is she's actually said "I could be a size 6 too if I had the
surgery" But when push comes to shove she doesn't really want to live
the life of a post-op.. :::sigh:::
