Question:
Pregnancy 2 mo postop
I am 2 mo postop and just found out that i am pregnant. I have to be no mor than 4 wks along. My concerns are the recent WLS, I take Paxil (which is not a good antidepressant to be on when pregnant due to complications) and also I have had 2 EGD's in the past month that required anesthesia. My bf and I have decided due to health reasons and the above mentioned that it may not be a good thing to continue this pregnancy. I have an appt. this am with my GYN to discuss the situation, but wondering if anyone else had this problem. — Nsggirl (posted on October 15, 2004)

Well...I am a pro-lifer so you wouldn't like my answer. I am hoping that
someway, somehow your doctor(s) can give you some positive feedback and
help you to decide to go through with the pregnancy. I have read where
there have been a few people that have gotten pregnant early out and have
continued the pregnancy. I haven't heard any life threatening problems. I
wish you the best.

I am on my second pregnancy post op... I take Prozac... my baby was born
perfectly healthy... I really think that you are pregnant for a reason and
hate to see such a wonderful miracle taken, you might not want to hear it.
I do however believe a woman has a right to choose, and ultimatly you have
to do what is right for you. I personally was scared, but it is as normal
post op to have a baby as before... and as someone mentioned before people
in underprivilaged countries have healthy babies everyday... you can do
this if you want to... it is possible...

I can't tell you what decision to make, but you would have a high risk
pregnancy. You might need to be on continuous total parenteral nutrition to
make sure both you and the baby get the proper amount of nutrients. Your
gyn can advise you more about the risks of anesthesia and medications in
early pregnancy. It all depends on how you feel about the pregnancy. It
certainly is not a decision I would want to face, and I wish you peace of
mind with whatever decision you make.

I am currently pregnant, 3 1/2 months...9 months post op. While I did not
get pregnant as early on as you I did watch a show on the Discovery Health
channel about Gastric Bypass where they found out she was pregnant DURING
the RNY procedure!! The baby and mother were both fine and the mother was
able to continue loosing after the baby was born. The baby didnt seem to
have any problems with having been under the anesthesia. As others have
said it is ultimitly your choice, and its one you and your BF have to be ok
with and able to deal with. I wish you luck and strength in this difficult
and trying time. Keep us posted on what your Dr has to say. God Bless,
Roxanne

My surgeon requires two forms of birth control for the first year post-op.
Why? Because with rapid weight loss your fertility goes sky high! And
because it is not the optimal situation for you or baby right now to be
trying to grow while your body is changing so fast with weight loss. Many
have done it and all has turned out fine, but some had major complications.
You might also want to consult with your surgeon to get his/her take on it
too.

I got pregnant just 3 months out from surgery. It wasn't planned but truly
the best thing that has ever happened for me and my husband of 17 years. I
was not considered "high risk." I took regular prenatals and had
a normal pregnancy. I had a natural labor with no complications. I lost a
total of about 75 pounds while pregnant. My baby is very healthly. Thank
God! My OBGYN said that I was one of many of her success stories. My
daughter is my world. Some say I should have waited, but I wouldn't change
a thing. I have continued to loose weight since her birth. As far as your
question, I wasn't on any meds when she was conceived. However, I did get
pregnant soon after surgery. I want to offer any advice I can if you choose
to continue your pregnancy. God bless and feel free to e-mail me
privately.

I am amazed that you got pregnant because to get pregnant you have to have
sex and I wouldnt let my husband in the same room with me for 4 mnths after
I had surgery....LOL! I was so miserable sex was the last thing on my mind,
but of course my kids are grown, I wish you the best, whatever decision you
make must be YOURS, not your family, friends, or the people on this board.
YOURS. Good luck and God Bless you.

You should also talk to your WL surgeon. I know that a lot of people have
perfectly healthy babies taking far worse drugs then Paxil. The actual
weight loss or post-op surgeries shouldn't pose a risk either. There is a
yahoo group out there specifically adressing this question. Sorry don't
know the name....you might want to search the archives. Good luck!

I too took paxil while I was pregnant. I did not have any problems or
complications. This was before my surgery though. I don't think the paxil
will give you any problems. I would just discuss with your doctor. Good
Luck.

Please don't jump in to terminating the pregnancy. As you see, many of us
early post ops have carried healthy pregnancies and produced healthy
babies. I got pg about 4 1/2 months post op and had a healthy baby boy. I
would definately discuss with your WL surgeon and also it is important to
find an OBGYN who has experience dealing with post op WLS pregnancies.
Mine did, so they did not consider me high risk. I just kept a very close
eye on my diet (eating all the time to get enough in). And my docs just
kept on eye on the baby's growth. I lost weight the entire pregnancy and
afterwards, but had a healthy son! Good luck with whatever you decide!

HI, I also just found out that I am 5 weeks pregnant and 4 months post-op.
I'm elated!!! I feel that the decision is strictly up to you. For me, at
the age of 38 with an 11 year old, I'm excited. I have read alot of
positive happenings and hope this pregnancy goes wonderful. I wish you well
with your decision.

While I am not in your situation, I take exception to ANYONE putting
pressure on ANY woman for her ultimate decisions. Her health and that of a
growing fetus is the issue--and perhaps this is not an ideal time. Either
way--you have support no matter what you choose...I AM NOT PRO ABORTION I
AM PRO CHOICE--all the best in whatever YOU CHOOSE!!

A girl in our local live group found herself 5 months pregnant, when she
was SIX MONTHS OUT! She had 4 months notice to get ready for a baby! (she
did want another, just not yet, and yes, she was using precautions). So,
for the first 5 months of that pregnanacy, she took rx, did everything a
normal person would do, lost 120 lbs. Once she found out, she naturally
took the best possible care of herself. The baby was born only a few days
early, was a teensy bit small (just under 6#), but healthy and happy,
growing and developing perfectly. A perfect start would be great, but not
all babies get a chance for a perfect start. This pregnancy has every
chance of ending with a warm bundle in your arms, complete, with working
vocal cords!

I got pregnant about 6 weeks after my WLS. I was 13 weeks along when I
found out. I thought the being tired,no cycle, and getting sick was due to
my surgery. During my early pregnancy I had an Upper GI while I was
pregnant (didnt know at the time) and took Welbutrin and Effexor. I only
gained 22lbs during my pregnancy and lost all of it 2 weeks after givin
birth to a healthy baby girl. Ihad my WLS 7/14/03,start weight of 243lbs
and now 5 months after giving birth weigh 148lbs. Not too bad considering
most of my first year was spent pregnant. This was the easiest pregnancy I
ever had,I al ready have a 13yr & 11yr old (The Lord has a sense of
humor lol) . The only thing I had to do different was take 2 prenatal
vitamins a day. Good Luck to ya.

I do not want to get into the choice debate this isn't the plave for that
(but I am proud to be a former pro-choice now pro-life due to my growing
faith), but I did want to let you know that although the rx and procedures
are not things that would be chosen to do on a pregnant woman they were
early enough that they shouldn't cause to much problems. Most women don't
know they are pregnant until they are 4-6 weeks and often have or do things
that are not "ideal". Please don't let the
"possiblities" make your decision, but the facts and what you
feel is right in your heart and soul!
