Question:
how can I can weight.

i'm 14 mos. post-op. and very happy about my surgery. I'm still losing and that concerns me. I can't eat sugar and eat 1100-1200 calories/55 gr. protein each day. Do you know of any protein drinks w/low sugar that could help me gain a few pounds. thanks.    — Mary H. (posted on September 16, 2004)

Do a google search for sugar free weight gain. I did one and it pulled different products. Here's one for example: http://www.enkueros.net/79911026638.html

Hi I have a few suggestions may or may not work for you but least I can type it,even if I dont always follow it.I am eight months out and under goal also starting weight 245 now 125 pds at five nine and in little 1-4 junior sizes.I have lost 7 pds since tt/hernia repair 3 weeks ago wo really trying and I am eating to stabilize my current weight and not lose anymore but not gain alot, but I suggest learning to eat a balanced diet like normal people not just shakes,so you can learn to eat anywhere you go ,and incorporate all your nutrients also not feel deprived.I have switched to calories with nuts, healthy oils, meats, protein bars like Carbwise, rich salads with olive oil and cheese, gone from using fatfree dairy to reduced fat,low fat peanut butter with apples or celery, protein shakes like Eas carb control which are 15 grams of protein 100 calories no sugar, omelletes, wheat toast, baked potatoes, pita bread, weight watcher or lean cuisine dinners, more fruit, veggies, steamed brown sherbert or ice cream as a treat, and also variations of things I ate while I was losing. My thing is dont go back to sugar and stay away from sugar and white bread, fried foods and grease but eat better carbs and meats and dairy. If you lose too much weight if your like me I dont want saggy skin.Of course Im not a longeterm postop but I am offering advice based on my personal case, you should consult dietician and doc.Of course maintain your daily calories, sugar and keep a good exercise regime at least 4 times a week to keep metabolsim burning and lean muscle mass.Good luck!

Mary...I am 8 1/2 months post op and have lost 109.5 pounds. I started at 333.5 and am currently at 224. I am 5 foot tall (maybe just 4'11"). For protein drinks I have Advantage Shakes by Atkins. I love the vanilla, chocolate delight, chocolate royale. They also have strawberry and cafe au lait (I don't care for the strawberry and I hate coffee so I don't do those). I found these in the pharmacy section at Walmart where the nutritional supplements are. There are 4 cans per case and they started out at $7.86/case but are now $6.83/case. I even got them on sale 2 weeks in a row for $5.70/case so I keep my out for these bargains even when I have enough at home to last awhile. Anyway, back to your questions...this shake has 170 calories, 9 g fat, total carbs 4g, dietary carbs 3g, sugar carbs 1g, and protein 20 g. These are very tasty. There are 11 oz per can (I usually split the drink into two servings). I also eat protein bars I find in the same section at Walmart. They are Advant Edge by EAS and my favorites are chocolate peanut butter crunch and chocolate chip brownie (I think that's the name...they're the bigger bars and cost $1.67 each). They have 240 calories, 8g fat, total carbs 25g, fiber carbs 6g, sugar carbs 1g, "other" carbs 18g, and 20 g protein. I split this into two servings too because if I eat it all at once, it's way too much and it makes me a little sick. A small inconvenience to these two particular products is they produce more gas than regular protein like meat. My dietician says it's most likely due to the fat they add to add the flavor since they can't use sugar. There may be some sugar alcohols in this bar, but I know there is none in the drinks. Hope this helps. Please feel free to e-mail me if you want. Good luck and God bless...Kathy

You state you're still losing. How much? Your body will tell you when it's done. You may need to start adding more solids to your eating (carbs, etc.) You should be eating up to 1/2 cup of food per meal (6 mini meals a day). Add some No sugar peanut butter, nuts, etc. to your diet. I'm 16 months post-op, was 329 lbs and I weigh between 135 lbs - 142 lbs. Keep a log of what you are eating. If it's all liquids add more solids. Again, you do not state how much you are still losing. When I make my protein drink I add milk, yogart, Omega oil, protein powder (30 + more grams of protein in one glass). Take a look at what your are eating.

Why don't you just eat more food?

Up your calories by a few hundred a day and weigh weekly. If still losing up it by anothr 100 calories a day until you find the right amount of calories to sustain or gain weight. Obviously 1100-1200 a day is way too low for you. You can just simply add protein shakes on your own-doctor them with banana, peanut butter, frozen fruit, milk, yogurt to add calories, or eat more food as a previous poster suggested.

Mary have you ever read the Pouch Rules for Dummies? I don't mean to offend you, but they really tell you how to deal with stopping weight loss and maintaning. I know I read them again at 18 months and sure enough I was being a dummy. My surgery was 7/02 311/-157/150 They work and you can find them at http://www.mehtabariatriccenter.com/pouch_rules_for_dummies.htm Good Luck
