Question:
Has Any One Tried These Neosporin Scar Sheets?

The advertisements look great... but the price is pretty high. I have Keloid scar tissue and my scar is pretty funny looking, and now that my tummy is getting flatter, the thought of a bare mid section intrigues me... The scar is now 10 months old... any thoughts?    — colette73 (posted on July 7, 2004)

I also am prone to keloid scars and I started using the scar sheets, starting when I was about 4 weeks post op for over 3 months. The only benefit that I saw was that the scar tissue around the staple marks seemed to get lighter during that time. But my basic scar did not get any smaller or lighter in color. We had a plastic surgeon at our suppor group meeting last month and he mentioned that this is an effective treatment. I mentioned that they did not seem to do a lot of god for me and his answer was that they are effective if you start using them immediately - before the scar tissue has started to form. So in your case, if you are already 10 month out, I would guess that they are not going to be very effective. This has been my experience. Our bodies all react differently. They could work better for you than they did for me. I did not think that they were worth the money I paid for them.

I have strips of silicone sheets all over my latest PS scars. I get the sheets from my PS and fortunately insurance covers it because they covered both PS's. His sheets are about 5x8 and are $17 each. The brand is Mepipore, if I remember right. He had me start using them as soon as the glue was completely gone on my LBL incision. I don't know if it made a difference but I have nice flat scars and as time goes on the tissue just softens more and more. I work the strips for about 3-4 weeks. I have now had the strips on the incision of this last surgery for about 3 weeks now and figure I will use them at least until I see him at the end of the month. <p>My understanding is the only way to fix a keloided scar is scar revision surgery to remove the tissue. Then you could start using the strips early on and hopefully they would do the trick. They are pretty amazing material because they stay on through thick and thin, showers, swimming etc.

I tried the Neosporin Scar Sheets, and was very dissapointed in them. They had a tendancy to come off during the night, and I would find them on the floor, the bed, etc. I have since switched to a liquid which I found at www.drugstore.com and I am happier with it. I decided to switch after reading the reviews on the site. The liquid is more expensive and smelly (until it dries, which is quick). The jury is still out regarding the effectiveness of them.

Hi Colette, No I have not tried the scar sheets - BUT I did use Mederma once my incision was healed- it made a world of difference. It takes quite a while- but I used it on part of my scar and not on a section to see if it really would work- it did! MAJOR difference! A wise investment of $20 something dollars OTC @ Walmart.

I too used Maderma and found it to be a most excellent product after my DS...started putting it on the port holes as they started closing up and now 18 mos out...you can barely see the holes in my tummy...I will be using it again when I have my LBL in October. Hope this helps a little... Kathy Cook
