My surgeon said it was OK for me to drink tea as long as it is decaf. Thus
far, I haven't had any (I'm just under 6 months post op) but I'm not a tea
drinker. I just don't like the taste, but I did purchase a jar of Lipton
Instant Tea with Lemon, Decaf. So, it's there for me to try if I want to.
But, the only way I like tea is if it has so much lemon in it that it
really tastes like lemonade.

Caffinated drinks (including tea) are diuretics. They deplete(sp?) our body
of water. So it is best to stay away from them. Some people drink it anyway
and just drink more water.

Other than caffeine, which has already been mentioned, it's the tannins in
tea (decaf, too) which interfere with iron and calcium absorption.

I hadn't heard about the tannins being a problem, but I'll definitely look
into it (at 15 months out, I'm still learning!). With my surgeon's
blessing, I drink between 20 and 40 ounces of decaf tea a day, and haven't
had any issues. My calcium levels are fine (I get a bone scan once a
year), but I'll check into the tannin thing. I've read that tea (black,
green or red) is good for you in moderate amounts--high in antioxidants and
a few micronutrients. I'll hate to give it up.

I drink decaf tea and coffee all day long. As a matter of fact, we have an
ice tea maker and make it by the gallon. I have never heard about the
tannins being a problem. My Dr. says it's fine.

The tannins in tea can also bother your stomach (they're acids) and we
RNYers have very little acid in our stomachs. However, tea with a bit
o'milk works fine for me. I always drink decaf tea or coffee with milk--
AND I drink Crystal Lite Iced Tea instaed of straight water. I just can't
stomach water right now.

My surgeon actually gave me a medicine cup of tea in the hospital, two days
post op. Every person on this board is probably going to have something
different to say, so just ask your doctor. Also listen to your body, that
helps out also.

One thing I was told was Coffee and Tea will "bind the iron" and
you will not get the benefits of it. I am anemic and just space the iron
and vits a couple hours from my coffee and tea. This also goes for Caffeine
and calcium. I space it.
