Question:
Are you 5'9 and weighed 280 or 41 BMI?
Just curious. I am having my surgery 06/03/04. I am excited and worried at the same time. I am afraid of failure, but excited about my new life. Aside from this, I am just wondering about others who started at 5'9 280lbs. How long did it take you to lose the weight? Briefly what was your routine? My surgeon mentioned that my target weight would be 155. I once weighed 152 in 1993 before I had my children and I was kinda thin to be so tall. I would settle for 165-170. Please share yout stories. I am 5'9" also, but started heavier than you at 332. I am eight
months out today and I have lost 120 pounds so far. My goal weight that I
set for myself is 168. I have 44 more pounds to go. I think that at that
weight, I will look great and I don't think I'll want to lose anymore
beyond that. I am really going to try to get to goal by my one-year
anniversary, but I don't know if it will happen or not. I eat what I want,
with the exception of sugar, and I am just now starting a regular exercise
program. I am sure that you will do fine. Congratulations on your
upcoming surgery date and best wishes to you!!! Feel free to email me if
you have any questions or concerns. Hugs, Kristy (lap RNY - 9/18/03 -

I was 260, 5'6.5" - so BMI was about 41. (Interestingly, I'm now
5'8"! I was bent over from arthritis.) I lost most of my weight in
about 10 months. I went from 260 to 125. This was almost 5 years ago, and
I'm now 124. I NEVER expected to be this size; my thinnest size was always
a 12, so when I got there I just assumed I would stop losing. Didn't happen
- I blew right past that goal and didn't stop til I was a 4/6. I have used
protein supplements from the beginning, and have always exercised. I did
have a regain right at the 2-year mark, but then this past fall I went on
the South Beach eating plan and got rid of it. Good luck! hugs, Ann .....

I was 5'8", 287 pounds 8 months ago. Now, I'm still 5'8 :), but I
weigh 179 pounds as of this morning. This month, I've lost about 8 pounds.
I'm wearing a size 12 pants, a medium top, and have 19 pounds till goal. I
had a one month plateau in the mix of my weight loss, but have been a
pretty steady loser. Good luck, TJ! Email me if you have any questions!

I am 5'9 and was 280 but after I had already lost 162 lbs. My goal weight
was 200. I am currently floating in the low to mid 190's. I've already
had the first of 4 PS's. I figure there is about 15 lbs of skin left to
remove. For me the absolute lowest I want to get is 180, so I really don't
want to lose any more, other than from PS, and am struggling to find the
way to maintain. I now weigh about what I did when I was 10-11. I have
never known this weight as an adult. 155 is way too low for me, but some
are comfortable with that size. I'm wearing a 14 and some 12's. I'm sure
after the remaining PS's a 12 will be the norm with some 10's. I just
don't want to be any smaller. Especially on the upper half of my body as
it is very bony already. All of the weight truly needs to come off the
thunder thighs.

TJ...I'm 19 weeks out from my surgery. I am 5 foot tall and I started at
333.5 and am currently at 271.5 for a total weight loss thus far at 72
pounds. I haven't set a target weight yet (I've been so big for so long
that I would be happy to just get under 200 pounds). My surgeon stated
before my surgery that I should lose 50-75% of my EXCESS weight within the
first year and would probably lose well for 12-18 months. Hope this
helps...Kathy

TJ,
I am not quite 5'10" and my Doctor recommended I go no lower than
165-170. Unless you are very small framed, 155 would be on the thin side
for your height. Even 180 would be an thin weight for you.
Good Luck on your surgery!!

Hi! I started at 270, BMI just over 40, height 5'8". I have a large
frame. I've lost 97 pounds, weighing in at 173 right now. My surgery was
9/11/03, so I'm a little over 8 months out (Lap RNY). If I never lost
another pound, I'd still be pretty happy. I hadn't been under 200 for 25+
years. People are starting to make the comments like "you're done
losing, aren't you," or "you don't need to lose anymore - you're
really thin." So even though I still weigh 173, I think I look a lot
thinner. But that has been the case for me all my life. Most people
didn't believe that I weighed 270 - everyone thought it was about 225-230.
I'm wearing a size 12-14 pants right now, and would like to get solidly
into a 12, which might mean about 10 more pounds. That would put my BMI in
the normal range, as well. I definitely don't want to go under 160 - I
think my shoulders are chest are starting to look a little
"scrawny" actually, but I'm using weight training to help build
up those muscles a little bit. Honestly, I really just started on this
routine, and I haven't been a faithful exerciser, but started walking a few
days a week with a friend. I am religious about taking my vitamin
supplements. I have never followed a strict diet plan, although I always
eat protein first, and no drinking 30 minutes before or after meals. I
hope this info was helpful to you, and best wishes on your upcoming
surgery.
