Question:
What did you do?

What did you do after surgery that you never thought you would be able to do again? I am a pre-op and I am making a wish list of all the things I would like to do once my weight allows. These are some of the things on my list...I want to ride a bike, go skating, run a mile(instead of walking), wear shorts , ride all the rides at an amusement park and wear heels again. I was just hoping people would share some of their personal accomplishments since they had WLS...no matter how big or small. Thank you all for being inspirations to me on a daily basis:-) — Sara A (posted on March 29, 2004)

Put on pantyhose without a struggle! but surprise, now that I can wear size 14 pants, I've found that I LOVE wearing pants. Haven't had on a pair of pantyhose in at least five months! Run on the beach with my grandchildren: cross my legs under my desk: get my hair cut really short: create and maintain the best looking garden in town: climb the stairs without pulling myself up by the handrail: shop in a "normal" clothing section..............so many things to experience...........so little time!

I can now fit into the seats at Rupp Arena! Before they were so tight they hurt and gave me bruises if I even tried them.

I have become somewhat of a camera ham. I enjoy having my picture taken now, whereas before surgery I would cringe, hide, and demand to be the photographer instead of the photo-graphee. LOL

Actually enjoy exercise!!! I can't believe I just said that! I am walking about 3 miles per day and on the days that I don't do it...get this...I MISS IT! I never, ever, in a million years thought I would like exercise. BUT I DO!

Going to an amusement park and actually fitting into the rides was one of my goals. Also, to go to sporting events and sit in the seats without feeling like I was stuffed into them and overlapping on the next seat. It's GREAT!!

Sara - Thanks for a great idea. I am pre-op, and plan on starting my list immediately. When I get scared about the surgery, I'll whip out my list! Thanks again.

I am out nearly 3 years. Early on it was doing the physical stuff but then helping others with WLS became the most rewarding part for me. Thats why I hang out here as a moderator.

Wear a pretty, lacy, bra with thin straps and the "normal" clasps in the back (1-3 hooks), be able to plop into a seat of a car and just be able to pull the seat belt over me, with no adjusting (except to make it tighter!), definitely wearing heels, as you mentioned, play on the ground with my son...Some things I didn't even think of, but notice now that they've happened: I don't overlap an average toilet seat anymore, I can shave my legs easily, I can wrap a towel all the way around me, I can fit in dressing room stalls and bathroom stalls easily, I can bend over without losing my breath...this was fun! Life will begin again for you, my dear, congratulations!!!

One big ah-ha moment for me was the day I sat in the middle seat of the airplane row, didn't overlap into my neighbors' seats, AND was able to cross my legs!

The first was to wear my husband's clothes (in other word be smaller than him). The second was to weigh less than what I lied about my weight on my driver's license.

I am almost 14 months out, and am technically below goal, but I feel that I am just fine, at 5'7" and between 135 and 137 lbs.. I can now sit in a movie theater seat with my purse on the seat next to me. I can go braless in a fitted spaghetti strapped dress. (I'll post the pictures after the party I am wearing it to). I can go shopping and buy just about anything. I LOVE trying stuff on, and my husband loves picking stuff out for me to try. I put back stuff that is too much $$$, not too small. I just draw the line at thongs, string bikini underwear and the other teeny things that won't cover my excess skin. I also won't wear bathing suits w/o something covering the tops of my thighs. I just feel liberated, and as many others have said, just plain ordinary which is a wonderful thing to be!!!!

Have my friends go shopping with me and then not be able to find me, because they "forget" that I'm thinner. I've had friends walk past me in the store, because they didn't recognize the new me! CB - (1/27/03- 298/165/I'm below my goal!)

Being able to shop anywhere!!! Preop, I went to Martha's Vineyard during the summer for vacation. Well, it was so cold and I didn't bring a jacket or sweater, but I had to freeze since there were no stores that carried anything in larger sizes. That was humiliating and very uncomfortable for me. But now I can buy things from Victoria's Secret, any gift shop, etc. Lovin' it.

I had a long list and I have to admit, all the things I didn't think about turned out to be more important. I would think the things that really make me cry are holding up things that are size ten.. or smaller.. or small or medium and saying..."this won't fit ME!" only to have it fit like a glove.

But this is when I really knew I'd made it -- I rode stand bye on an airplane, knowing I'd get a middle seat, and I did.. and it was FINE -- so easy I laughed at myself over it. Then of course, I called everyone I knew and whispered into my cell phone.. "I'm sitting in the MIDDLE!". Good luck, its a wonderful journey!

Crossing my legs, sitting in the movie theater, looking great in my chaps on my Harley Davidson, wearing sleeveless shirts and shorts, enjoying sex more, being able to wear my hair long with out looking shlumpy, shopping for lingerie, not hating every photograph of myself, having men look at me, having women hate me (just kidding), having people exclaim, "You're so tiny!", having ex boyfriends pick up on me then realize who I am...the list goes on. Not one thing could make me go back to the way it was!!!!

One more..........priceless! Happened to me last night. My husband, who has always been thin, put on a pair of khaki shorts and they fit him. They were MINE! The only way he knew something was wrong was that the legs were a bit more flared than a pair of men's shorts would be. I can wear his t-shirts now to exercise in and I borrowed one of his belts last week. What fun!

10 months post op here, down 118 lbs. Let's see,,, my list includes, crossing my legs, tying my shoes without getting light headed, fit into size 12 jeans, look good in jeans, share clothes with my daughter, fit between 2 closely parked cars, walk, stand, smile when I see myself in the mirror, feel sexy, get whistled at, did a 5 mile walk for breast cancer, shop in stores that don't specialize in "PLUS" sizes, wear heels. Also ( hehehe) My husband and I are having fun :-). It's amazing what a thinner body can do. LOL. Good luck to you!!! :-)
