Question:
Is something wrong? slow looser

My weight loss seems VERY slow. I have only lost 15 lbs since my surgery, which was almost 3 months ago. I did lose 19 lbs. just before my surgery due to the liquid pre-op diet I was on, however. I've just lost 2 lbs. since last posting on my profile page, which was almost a month ago. Seems very unusual for some one who is not yet 3 months out. I can eat as much as others I am around without getting full - in fact it seems like I can eat more than a normal person! Here is my recent weight loss history: 12/1/2003 272 began pre-op liquid diet BMI = 45 12/11/2003 261 12/16/2004 253 SURGERY DATE 12/24/2003 252 1/26/2004 246 2/16/2004 241 3/8/2004 238 Do you all think something is wrong??? Many thanks, Suzanna    — Suzanna M. (posted on March 11, 2004)

Hi, The only thing I can think of is that some ppl are just slower losers than others, but you might have a large stoma problem too, are you able to eat alot at one time? Or you may have something else wrong to where it is making you lose at a slower pace, I would recomend you too go and see your surgeon adn have him run some tests on you to find out the problem if there is one. Good Luck to You!

Suzanna, I think you should consult your surgeon. I don't believe you should be able to eat what a "normal" person eats.. At 3 months out you should only be consuming 1/2 cup of food at a time (about 4-6 mini meals daily)... It could also be the food that you are eating, some go through the pouch much quicker than others, so then you would be able to eat more. Take Care, Kim

Sounds like a staple line disruption, or your opening to the small intestine never shrunk down. If you had RNY, you should have lst more just from the bypass part?

Assuming you are following the food (protein first, locarb), water, and exercise rules, I would definitely ask your surgeon about what is going on. That does seem a little slow. Good luck to you.

I would DEFINITELY see your surgeon, Suzanna. My mom also had no trouble eating a normal amount of food post surgery. The doctor did an upper GI and found that the food was going right back into her old stomach through a fistula, an opening that formed between her new stomach and the old one. Thus, she could eat nearly as much as before surgery. She goes in tomorrow for endoscopy and possible repair of her fistula. Good luck to you! XOXO Jen

I am also three months out and I have lost 53 pounds but I can eat a lot more than 1/2 cup at a time!!I started out at 228 pounds and now weigh 175 I feel that I can eat mor than average patients but I am still losing the weight but I think I'll ask my surgeon why I can eat so much! Good luck!!

I hate to say it...but that seems slow. Don't panic. If something is wrong, it can be repaired! If nothing is wrong, then you might just be an exteremly slow loser. But that's not entirely bad! You'll be less likely to have sagging skin issues! And if its just a matter of being slow, rest assured that the weight WILL come off, just might take longer! Call your surgeon. Schedule some tests. Demand that he check EVERYTHING to make sure its working right.
