Question:
Have any of you experienced weight gain with depo provera?

My doctor swears that I shouldn't experience any weight gain by using depo provera. I've heard lots of information otherwise. Are there any of you - POSTOP - that have used it? If so, did you experience any weight gain from it?    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on March 2, 2004)

I started on depo provera about a month before surgery. I am now five and a half months post op and I have never had a problem with it. I don't think that it has caused me to lose less weight. I have not yet experienced a weight gain or even a plateau. Good luck to you! Hugs, ~Kristy (lap rny 9/18/03 - 320/233/168)

I was a depo user for 4 years before my tubal, and am currently using it again (for the last 2 years) for problems with my cycle. Regardless, I never had any weight gain from it. I am only 7 weeks post op now and had my last shot 3 weeks ago. I have lost 35 pounds so far, so I don't think it is hindering my loss in any way. Plus, having NO monthly cycle is a great side affect! Good Luck.

NOPE! I've been on Depo shots since 1995 and more frequent than the norm. Anywhere from 6-10 weeks. I'm going back to 8 week shots as I did best on them. Streched them out to 10 weeks and had breakthrough bleeding this last time for over a week. We've used the Depo shots mainly to control irregular bleeding. I had my tubes tied in Dec. but will still likely be on Depo till a hysterectomy. I lost 227 lbs in 12-1/2 months so it definitely did not affect my weight loss.

I've been on Depo-Provera since 1994 and have never noticed weight gain with it. I'm currently 7 weeks post-op and have lost 50 pounds, so I don't think it's negatively affecting my weight loss. -Frances

ok i guess the i am the only one to disagree. depo provera is a hormonal type of birth control (like the pill) and one of the side effects IS weight gain. maybe not for someone freshly post op and loosing a lot of weight, but i could slow down weight loss. i'm not sure where your doc got his/her info on depo not causing weight gain, but i am sorry to say, this is not true. read the insert that comes with it, if you don't have one, as the doctor or your phamacy. some people simply don't gain weigh on depo (lucky), but it is a potential side effect. keri

Yes the insert does indicate that a typical weight gain is around 5 lbs in a year. However, it appears a number of us have not experienced this as I cannot attribute any of my weight gain to the Depo and it certainly has not slowed down my loss. Life anything in life, each body deals with it differently. For me I could have gain more than 5 lbs and still would not have quit it because it solved some horrible continuous bleeding problems. I would not discard an option without trying it. It is way safer PO than BCP's as far as protecting against pregnancy. It's not an issue of having to be absorbed as it's floating in your body all the time. JMO

I am 20 months post-op. I had a toatl weight loss of 115 pounds in 1 year. Maintained it untill I started the dopo shot 6 months ago. I have gained 25 pounds. I am now struggling to get it off. I didn't rearrange my insides to have birth control make me obese. I am now coming off the depo. In my opinion Depo os a NO NO. Also beware of the pill, we do not absorb any thing orally as we did pre-op. Good luck with your birth control decisions.

I realize that you are asking specifically for post-op info, but I had to mention my "story". I went on the depo shot back in '92 and was 135lbs. In less than a year I was at 197lbs w/no changes in my eating or exercising. I worked out at a gym 3-4x a wk, did aerobics at least 4x a week, wasn't into junkfood or fastfood really. After a year, I chose to stay on it because my Dr INSISTED my weight gain had nothing to do w/the shot, but due to "other causes". So I worked out more, joined Weight Watchers, RX diet pills, you name it. I could never lose more than 5lbs!! Switched Dr's and the new one told me of the steroidial effect it has on women. By the time I was off the shot (I admit that I was on it for 3yrs)my body was soooo screwed up it wasn't funny. That is the biggest reason for me to have my WLS now. My body has yet to recover from the depo, and despite numerous attempts, I can't lose any of it. Not clear at all about post WLS, which is what you asked....sorry.
