Question:
Has anyone tried drinking soda without letting it get flat first?

I am craving for a diet sprite or diet coke. Can someone tell me if they have tried to drink soda out of the can or bottle without letting it go flat first, and if so did you get sick. Please Help — jimnetta N. (posted on February 25, 2004)

If I pour a soda over ice in a glass I can drink it. I can drink a little straight out of a can or bottle but it hurts my pouch a little bit. Soda doesnt taste as good now as it did pre op.

You're really new to be drinking sodas . . . that's *not* a value judgement, it's hard to tolerate them early on because of the gas bubbles.
It hurts!
Try if you want to, but pour it over ice, stir to lose more bubbles, and be very cautious.

I drink a diet soda once in a while. I never drink it out of a can, but I don't have to let it go flat either. I get it with lots of ice and stir it for a few minutes, that releases alot of the bubbles. If the first sip hurts a little, then I stir it more until it doesn't fizz anymore.

there are lots of questions on this in the archive, so you can look there for even more postings. The doc and dietician I've seen said no more you can't have it anymore. I have, based on what I've read here, not followed that. Maybe once per week (or less) I have about 2 to 3 oz of diet coke straight from the can. Really small sips at that. One time I did drink about 8-10oz over a three to four hour period. It just isn't as good to me as it used to be. WAIT until you are well healed and making good progress. Just remember you can't go back to drinking soda all day long, you have to have water, Fruit 2O, sugar free koolaid, etc.

I started drinking diet coke or diet pepsi (fountain) at around 3 months out, ice cold yumm, and at first I let it go flat, then started sipping with all the bite of ice cold coke that makes your eyes water. I have never had any pain or discomfort while drinking, I sip it through a straw and over a period of time. Take it easy and enjoy.

Since I haven't had my surgery yet I am not an expert on the soda thing. But what you may want to try is to mix diet sprite, 7up etc... with either juice or kool-aid. I drink crystal light, which is alittle to sweet for me. So I either put a little water in or a splash of soda and it tastes wonderful. I drink alot of soda (diet and caffine free, so not as bad) so I will be having soda withdrawls after the surgery. Oh well the pain of looking good. Margaret

Yes. No problems. I guess I'm in the minority, though. I tried it about four months out, and by five months out, i was drinking a 12 ounce fountain soda (diet coke, caffeine-free) about once a week. No pain, no problems with gas. i don't guzzle it, though...i drink it over a period of an hour. If you're really craving it, go for it. Your pouch will let you know if you screwed up or not.

I tried some sprite and my stomach had the LOUDEST churning, bubbling noises I've ever heard. I've only had it that once in the last 20 weeks and to be honest I don't even miss it anymore. Good luck to you! K

I had a Diet Coke at about six months, barely finished a quarter of it and thought it tasted weird. I went to black cherry soda about a month later and since it went okay because I sipped it slowly, I was having one a night. In a month I gained 10 lbs and the only change I had made was that damn soda. I have one "now and again" (maybe once a month) but as rule, generally steer clear of them as they still taste a bit odd to me and the ones that taste good (full sugar ones) are no good for me.

I started drinking diet caffeine free moutain dew at about 2 weeks out and have never had a problem. Pepsi or coke bothers me slightly. It seems the clear ones work better for some reason. Although I drink it slow and not as often as i did in the past.

I'm sitting here right now with 20 oz. diet coke. I've NEVER let pop go flat and I've never gotten sick. I'm over 2 years post op and my weight loss has not been hurt by drinking pop.

I used to be a Diet Coke junkie... but the only soda I can handle is Diet Mountain Dew with a ton of ice, from the fountain ONLY. Otherwise, I vomit is back up. For me, anything else is like alka-selzer in my pouch :)

Everybody is different on this subject. I can drink soda with absolutely no problem at all, but my brother had his surgery about 1 year after me and cannot drink soda whatsoever. Try taking little sips first, just in case it doesn't settle well with you. If there is no problem than drink up. Kelly [email protected]

I used to be a soda freak... cherry coke or mountain dew... 2 or 3 a day..... since the surgery I dont crave them anymore. I have maybe one a week and it takes me 2 or 3 days to drink a 20 oz bottle. My stomach makes all kinds of noises with it and I find I crave sweet stuff so I really try to stay away from soda.

I can not drink soda out of a can or bottle, just hurts way too much. But if I pour it over ice I am fine. I think my fave. diet pop is Diet Cherry 7-up. Most people like soda with ice, so to me Im not having to do something odd to enjoy an occasional soda! Good Luck to you!

Hi Jimnetta, I'm 8 months out and if I drink soda without defizzing it, it bubbles back up and I get an intense pain under the breast bone. I must admit I was a soda freak prior to the WLS now I just think it's too sweet and would rather drink lots of water. Good Luck, Debbie
