Question:
I'm post-op RNY & wanted to get some good ideas on snacks easy to bring to work?

Hi, I wanted to get some ideas that some of you use for snacking through out the day. When I am at work I can't seem to stay away from the vending machine. I need some good healthy ideas that are easy to take to work & are also high in protein. Thanks for your help.    — Allison T. (posted on February 10, 2004)

I have personally become addicted to Beef Jerky. I love the Teriyaki flavor! It has 12grams of protien per 1oz. of Jerky. I keep a bag in my car and at home at all times. It is great if I just don't have time to eat or I forget. I will eat a couple of peices while waiting on the kids at school or while working at my computer. Another thing that is good in protein are Slim Jims. Good Luck and God Bless! Dana Gates

NUTS, I love nuts! Jerky is good too, I just cant eat much at a time yet. Pnut butter, fruit. Can you bring a small cooler and an ice pack? Then string cheese would be good too! Good Luck

I like the jerky too. Another idea is the Gerber Meat Sticks, each jar is 10 grams of protein and they are good. They can be eaten cold or at room temp. They're samll enough to store several in your drawer and eat whenever. I also snack on David's pumpkin seeds. I've got several co-workers snacking on the seeds now too.

I like the Atkins Crunchers, they are soy snack chips, a 1 oz bag has 12 to 13 grams of protein (depending on the flavor)

all the snacks that the others mentioned sound great, but i wanted to add something alittle different. i know you have heard the saying what wls works on the stomach and not the brain. i think this is the hardest part of all to deal with. snacking is ok if it doesn't turn into grazing. i have the same problem you do. i don't overeat or graze but i'm always thinking about doing it. i'm seriouly thinking about getting some help to deal with that issue on a one on one basis. i know for myself that if i don't learn how to deal with food that i could snack and graze myself back up to 315lbs. like alot of others have done. best of luck

Every day I bring cheese or deli turkey, an orange, a banana and a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese. I split the fruit with my co-worker. I am supposed to get 3 servings of fruit a day, but I think by splitting it, it is more like 2 servings or less. But at least I am getting them in!

I like to snack on a no bread sandwich. I take lacy swiss cheese and wrap it around deli sliced ham. It is quick and easy and you also get protein in. Same as the others i like jerky. Dont forget to get your water in. Some times it curbs the snacking. Good luck to all. I was 265 and am now 140 and holding. :)

I found Soy Pretzels in Trader Joe's. Like the atkins crunchers, they give you protein and crunch!

I am just over 4 weeks post-op, and had an appointment with the nutritionist just last week. She has me on 4 small meals per day, but said absolutely under no circumstances should there be snacking for me? She said that it was too easy to slip in unnecessary and calories. Of course for every surgeon and every nutritionist there is a different plan (so I am learning, not preaching), but I just wanted to include that perspective among the responses.

I am 11 mos post op. My Doctor forbids snacking - afterall that's how most of us got so big to start with. At about 8 mos I changed my eating from 3 meals to 4-5 very small meals per day. They are snack size. I bring tiny cups of cottage cheese to work as well as lean cold cuts and cheese. I keep my mini-meals high in protein low in carbs. I do "cheat" once in a while if I am on the road and get a taquito at 7-11. I found that if I eat my mini-meals, I am not tempted to snack because I am prepetually full.

Beef or deer jerky or sticks, cottage cheese, string cheese, sf yogurt, Atkins Crunchers, Glenny's Soy Crisps, oranges, grapes, Triscuits with deli meat or cheese, protein bars or shakes. I've used all of these for snack items at work. Luckily for me, I'm not close to the vending machine! My usual pattern is protein shake for breakfast (6:30 AM), then a mid-morning snack around 9:30 or 10:00. That gets me through until lunchtime at Noon. I don't always have an afternoon snack, but if I do, I'll eat the protein bar (sometimes in my car on the way home from work at 4:15 or so). Then we have dinner around 7:00, and I don't usually have anything after that. I agree with other posters that you have to make sure you don't turn your snacking into grazing, although honestly, grazing was never really a problem for me - overeating at my regular mealtimes was definitely my problem! Best wishes. Lap RNY 9/11/03, 254/189/???

To me, a snack is anything that is eaten between my regular meal times, regardless of whether it's called a snack or not. My doctor said to eat six small meals which to me meant three meals and three snacks. I've never been a snacker so I usually only have the three small meals plus a mid-afternoon snack. Can't seem to find time for the extra two meals/snacks. But here are some of the things I have: pepperoni nuked on paper towels to make chips, string cheese, 1 or 2 ounces nuts, peanut butter on a graham cracker, deli meat wrapped in a cheese slice, a small container of egg or tuna salad, cheese cubes, pork rinds, left over subway wrap after I ate one half for lunch, chicken salad on 1 slice low carb bread.......I'd solve the vending machine problem by leaving ALL my money at home.

I'm 10 months out and I've just discovered pork rinds. Not my facorite prior to rny but now I like them-they're crunchy, no carbs and good protein. Give 'em a try! Beth - 269/148/1??

One thing I like for snacking on is steamed and salted soy beans. you pop them out of the shell, and they are a great treat. lots of protien too.. I buy them at costco, but I am sure you can get them other places too... another thing I eat is nuts. :-) good luck
