Question:
I need sugarfree
I'm allergic to aspartame. Thank GOD Splenda is now coming out in more and more products (including Kroger Lite yogurt, which I just discovered last nite...yippee!!). But...I'm scheduled for a Lap RNY on March 9, 2004, and I'm getting ready for after surgery, including gathering supplies and necessities. I need recipes for "jello" (using Knox gelatin, I'd assume...) and pudding to get me through the first post-op weeks that don't use any form of aspartame. Has anyone out there mastered any recipes? Unfortunately I can't answer your question, but I do want to let you know
about another all natural sweetner that alot of people use that are
allergic to aspartame. It's called Stevia and you can find it on-line or
at any vitamin store. If you combine it WITH the splenda, it gives a
sugar-like taste, not an artificial sweetner taste. Good luck to you for
an uneventful surgery!

Good Luck to you on your upcoming surgery. I dont have any recipes for
jello but I wanted to let you know that I stocked up on tons of stuff
before surgery and didnt use most of it. My tastes changed so much that I
got ill even looking at jello and puddings. Keep just a few things on hand
to see what you'll really be able to get down. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02

You could possibly use Knox Gelatin along with a flavored syrup like
DaVinci (which is made with Splenda). I haven't tried this... but I will
and then I will let you know what I come up with.
I have to say that I totally agree with the previous poster about not
stocking up too much before surgery. I made that mistake and still have
things left over from that. I would make sure that you have some type of
protein powder or protein drinks on hand... and just a few food items that
are approved by your doctor for early postop... other than that... wait
until you find out what you like and what you can tolerate after surgery
before stocking up too much.

I would stay away from artificially sweetened stuff and work with broths ,
shakes, I do make stuff w/ splenda. pudding is easy, any cookbook has a
recipe for pudding , just sub, splenda where it says sugar. I usually use
1/4 less splenda than the amount stated for sugar as I find if I use the
full amt. it is too sweet. I thoiught I was allergic to nutrasweet prior to
srgery as I would get itchy if I ate it. Now that doesn't happen anymore, I
think it was interacting with a medication I was on.

I don't know if it's a new product or I just found it since we just got a
Kroger, but Kroger brand lite yogurt is sweetened with Splenda and NOT
aspartame and fructose. They have some unbelievable flavors too!

I also have aspartame issues. I used Knox to set Talking Rain, diet Ice,
diet Sobe, etc. Shasta has 4 SPlenda flavors, and so does Jones Soda.
Warming and stirring the soda will get rid of most of the bubbles. Oh, and
Diet Rite, also 4 flavors or more . . . Cola, White Grape, Raspberry,
Tangerine (my fave!), and Kiwi-Strawberry.
