Question:
What is the best low calorie protien supplement?

What is the best low calorie supplement, and where can you buy it. Also what are the cost per serving.    — Peter L. (posted on January 8, 2004)

That's like asking what's your favorite color; everyone has one and the all are different! It depends on what you're looking for in a supplement I guess. I drink a protein shake once a day which has 30 grams of protein in it. Some people take a tasteless liquid protein called proteinex (correct spelling?) which you can ask your pharmacist to get you. It's not a prescription, but I believe it is kept behind the counter. Are you pre or post op? If you're pre, take the time now to find a protein supplement that you really like so that when the time comes for you to start using it you don't have to go through a bunch of them that are awful to find the one you like.

Peter, go to www.Vitalady.com and order samples. Vitalady is Michelle Curran, both she & her husband have had WLS, and they only carry stuff that's good for us. Try as many samples as you want until you find the one(s) that you like best, and then order the big tubs. Good luck!

I like Isopure zero carb protein drink. 20oz bottle has 40grms of protein. I get it at Vitamin SHoppe. It's not a thick milky type drink, it's more like a kool ade. I tried a few before surgery that I thought I liked (Adkin's being the favorite at that point.) After surgery, I couldn't even look at them. Isopure zero carb is the only one I can tolerate now. Be aware that taste buds do change for some people after surgery. It is a little expensive about $3 a bottle. I drink half in the morning and the rest in the afternoon. Sometimes if I need a little extra boost to kick in the weightloss I'll drink 2 bottles in one day. RNY 5/15/03 down 106lbs. Good Luck to you :-)

I'm pre-op (one more month!), but I did try getting a sample pack from a few places. But the best TASTING one I've found is at http://www.protein-solution.com/RealMeals you can order a sample pack of 2. The best thing is that to me they didn't have that metallic or vitamin after taste. I hate that lol but I got vanilla and it was nice. It commes in pouches that have 2 servings in them and if you use milk to make them easch serving has 37 g. of protien and LOADS of vitamins. Not to shabby ;)

I use Unjury from www.unjury.com. Before adding skim milk it only has 90 calories which I consider really great. With 6 ounces of skim milk it has 150 calories. Here is a break down. 1 scoop unjury = 90 calories, 3 carbs, 2 sugars and 20 proteins. 1scoop = about $1. I use 1 scoop per day which with 6 to 8 ounces of skim milk gives me half of my daily protein needs. To me the cost is a reasonable price but even if it was a bit more expensive it would be worth it because it tastes wonderful! Good luck!!!

I make my own milkshades in the blender. I like Designer Whey protein powder from GNC to add the protein. Then I put in assorted berries (frozen)or cocoa power and sweetener packets.

I sometimes use Designer Whey (choc or vanilla) and mix with skim milk but most of the time I use Weider Tropical Punch flavor and mix it with crystal lite lemonade. Yummy. It has 120 calories per scoop and I use one scoop to make 24 ounces. I get it at my local Harris Teeter grocery store.

Someone mentioned www.vitalady.com. If you go there and click on Comparison (on the left, about halfway down) she has comparison of each brand she sales broken out depending on if you are getting 120 grams per day or 60 grams per day. If you click on each of those links you will find a chart that includes total calories, protein, fat, carbs, type of sweetener used, etc. She also tells you how many scoops you will get out of each container, that way you can calculate how much it would cost you. You would have to go to her protein pages to find the total cost for each container. She does sale samples so you try before you commit to a whole 2 or 5 pound container.

I use the Optimum 100% Whey Protein from GNC.It is 110 calories per serving. It has 1.5g of fat,3g of carbs,1g of sugar and 22g of protein per serving. I bought the 5 lb jar so I'm not sure of the cost but I think it's around $1 per serving. I mix mine with skim milk.

I use Zero Carb Vanilla Isopure. 2 scoops mixed with 1 cup of Fat Free Lactaid with Soy Protein and 1 teaspoon of Fat Free Nestle Hot Chocolate Mix makes a great shake. I blend it with a hand blender and pour it over a few ice cubes to keep it cold for the time it takes me to drink it. It has 64.5 grams protein, carbs 15.5 and 322.5 calories. My docs tell me to get in at least 70 grams of protein a day and that one drink helps me do it pretty easily. Then later in the day I'll try to eat about 30 grams more. Also, I've added Amaretto and Irish Cream Sugar Free Davinci Syrups to the mix for a different flavor, and I've substituded Raspberry Syrup for the hot chocolate mix. To me the Isopure, though expensive, is still worth the money. It has 22 servings in a big tub and costs about $50 from GNC, unless you take off 20% the first week of the month with a Gold Card. I no longer worry about buying other protein supplements. As another poster said, tastes are different for everyone. Good luck in finding the right one for you.

The best one is the one you will actually drink! I've tried several and found a few that I like...the cheapest being Optimum Nutrition's 100% Whey...I order it in 10 pound bags and it comes out to be just under .35 per serving. I also like the Carribian Cooler Nectar which, is about .65 per serving. Like someone else suggested, I would go to vitalady and order 10-20 samples (several different vanilla, chocolate, strawberry - plus any other flavors you think sound at all good). I know it might seem a bit expensive to do that...but, in the end, you will have saved yourself tons over paying $20-30 for one container that you can't stand. Good luck to you!
