Question:
Anything REALLY work for bathroom odor???

I had my surgery three years ago the 29th. I know "everyone" has smelly poop but since having surgery I honsetly stink up the entire house...and I use the bathroom in the back! My question is... Is there anything out there that can help this problem? Air purifier or something??? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks — Vel K. (posted on January 3, 2004)

Get a can of air freshner. Spray your bathroom and the hall way nearby BEFORE you go. Poo a little...flush, re-spray. Yeah, I know...its time consuming but it seems to work for me and my bathroom is IN my bedroom!

I don't know if you can take capsules, but activated charcoal from the health food store works wonders. If you can't take that then liquid chloryphyll will also work. Both freshen your breath also. Go to your local health food store and check it out! Sandra

Hello !
I can relate, believe me. I handle it the "romantic" way. I light a candle in the bathroom before I begin and it seems to help. Yankee candles are great and they put out a scent pretty quickly. I just use a little votive holder. My current favorite scent is "Citrus and Teakwood". It has been a little hard to find, but smells really great.
Look at it this way, better out than in !

I found that the air freshener brand Oust works great - give it a try...also be sure to use the fan if you have one.

Have you tried Devrom? Or acidopholus? Lots of folks find they are both very effective. Blessings, dina

Activated charcol does work for odor but it also can severely INTERFERE with vitamin absorption! I think this is especially true for calcium. This is why it usually isn't advised for post-op WLsers even if it is a valid remedy for gas, etc. for normal folk. :) I've heard Devrom is really great for gas and smell. I haven't really had an excessive problem with this myself, but I've read that Devrom really works. Instant (and multiple) flushes are good, lighting a match immediately afterwards works for some, a good room deodorizer/spray... All the suggestions listed below are good! I'd just be really careful about the activated charcol. All the best, Teresa

I keep a "large jar" candle burning in my bathroom all the time,as well as others through out the house, BUT, I do extinguish it when I leave the house though, and I do flush before getting off the pot,and we have the exhaust fan running all the time. that helps. When I am at a friends home or public, I keep a small container of perfume to spray also. I love yankee candles too, and I also use natures vineyard, citrus/melon, and berry.

I'm thinking you are a DS or distal RNY? If so, there are couple things that can help,. No milk, no sugar, white carbs? I mean you can try to skip those for 48 hours each and see if they make any difference. The other thing would be flagyl, Rx, to help. However, with a short common channel, some smell is pretty ineveitable. One of our local support group members made a "sweet seat" and I wish she'd marketed them. It is attached to the toilet and sucks the air out and down. Amazing. She gave us the prototype, but I could use 2 more! LOL! The FAYGo method works best for me (flush as you go), but I also use lil neutralizers which do not leave any odor instead. I've tried chlorphyll, cheap and expensive, Devrom--nothing seemed to help.

Keep a book of matches in the bathroom. Striking a match takes the odor away instantly as the carbons in the match absorb the oxygen in the room. Try it it really works!

I use a room deodorizer called "Smell Be Gone" from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It comes in a pump spray bottle, has a nice citrus odor, and REALLY WORKS. It's also useful for pet odors, and it's safe to spray it directly on the dog.

I would suggest that, just as you flush, you strike a couple of matches and toss them in to go down. It may sound incredible, but something about the sulfur in the match heads kills the smells. You should use book matches to do this, not box matches.
