Question:
Weight loss based on what weight

I'm curious what you consider you beginning weight when you say you lost X amount of pounds since surgery. I have three different weights and don't know what to go by. My initial consultation weight was 274, my pre-op weigh-in was 261 (because of mandatory weight loss my Dr wanted before doing surgery), and my weight the morning of surgery (after a weekend of bowel prep) was 251. I'm now two weeks post-op and weight 240. I look at it like I lost 11 pounds since surgery. Sure it sounds better to say 21 pounds or even 34 pounds. But to me I've lost 11 pounds. What do you guys go by when you say how much weight you've lost?    — chadwick (posted on December 21, 2003)

Hello. I would also go with the 274. You have lost 21 lbs. If someone asks that is what you lost. You will always know that some is pre op and some is post op. I think if you are talking to someone on this board you should tell them how much before and after. But someone who is not familiar with the surgery will not know the difference.

My doctor also required a 10% loss before surgery. I have always counted back from what I weighed on my first visit to him. Actually that is when the journey began. I just say I have lost 146 all together and if anyone wants to be specific I say 27 pre-op and 119 since. You do deserve credit for every pound you lose.

I'm counting each and every lb I lose whether pre or post op. I've lost 46 lbs to date and should have surgery very soon. I worked hard to lose these 46 lbs ... I say count all the weight.

I go from the weight I gave the morning of surgery.

Personally, I would go with the 274 since the weight loss you had was mandatory to prep for surgery. If you wanted to, 261 is fair as well. Bowel prep doesn't count because it was all fluids. I personnally gained 12 pounds while in the hospital from IV fluids. I do not count that as part of my weight loss simply because it came off so fast after I got home anyway. I count mine start as the morning of surgery weigh in and I think the surgeon does too because that's the number he uses at check ups. I had no bowel prep, judt had to stop eating at noon the day before surgery.

You can ask your surgeon's office which weight they will use and go by that. My surgeon goes by the weight I was at my initial consult, because that is the only weight THEY have on file for me. The weight the morning of surgery is in the hospital records and while the office might have access to those, they go by what I weighed on their scales at my consult.

My dr didn't require the pre-surgical weight loss. So I go from what I weighed on my scale at home before going to the hospital. Since I currently weigh on my scale, I think that's fair.

I too go by my highest weight ever which occurred in March 2003. I started on this quest at that point and to date, have lost 75 pounds, only 35 of it since surgery.

I go by what I weighed at my first appt. with my surgeon. I lost 16 lbs. between that day and my surgery day so I include those 16 lbs. since that is part of the 76 lbs. total that I have lost.

I go by what I weighed the morning of the surgery, they weighed me as they were getting me preped for surgery.

I personally go by my pre-op visit weight, I weighed 5lbs less the day of surgery which was probably due to getting ready for surgery! I say go by whatever number you want, it all counts!

I go by my highest weight. I worked harder to lose 14 pounds before my surgery than I've had to work post-WLS! I weighed 259 at my consult last February, gained to 270 by the end of May, and had to lose back to my consult weight or be cancelled for surgery (9/11/03). At my pre-op appt, I weighed 256. I'm now 203, so I consider my total weight lost to be 67 pounds.

Look at your first sentence "X amount of pounds since surgery". If you are using that, then it would be what you weighed the morning of surgery.

That is an interesting question. My last supper's actually had me up on the day of surgery even with a moderate effort at bowel prep. I am going by my weight at that time since it is my official pre-op weight the day of surgery. However, if I had been in a program that required me to lose pounds prior to surgery I would begin at my highest weight. Either way for me is less than my official highest weight a couple years ago. I prefer to weigh in sans clothes so I am counting my official weight as the 290.8 of pre-op weigh-in, but am taking off the .8 for the gown. I intend to do my subtraction from the 290. Now when I get a chance to change my daily showers to a.m. before food I will get an accurate idea of what exactly I have lost. I believe I am down about 17-18 pounds in 2 weeks. I did not count my surgery extra fluid weight for sure (even though it is actually very close to my highest weight recorded by a doctor). Sounds like we all differ a bit, so just pick a number and go with it. Sandra
