Question:
Post Op 1 year or more. I was wondering if I can here stories of post op
that did not have any problems or complications during their first year then later developed complications. What type of problems have you encountered and why. I have not experienced any problems so far. I was just talk ing to a friend and he told me about a lady that we both know that had the surgery. She is is 14 months out and experienced some type of problem where her stomach got filled with air and she had to go into surgery again. This friend that told me this does not know I had the wls. I told him I had gallbladder surgery. I have lost 60 pounds. A couple days ago is the first time he has said anything about my weighloss. He ask me did I have an tummy tuck. I told him, no. He say I am losing weight. He does not know anything about the surgery. He is totally against it. He says that people who have don't look good after. A few months ago we were talking about this same lady and he told me if I every do that surgery he would never talk to me again. Then I was talking to a freind and she told me of a lady that had the surgery who is having major problems after about a year. I was just getting a little concern about what I am in store for in the months to come? — Just P (posted on December 10, 2003)

I am 14mo post-op and have had no medical problems outside of the normal,
which I still have to post questions on knowing what is normal and not.
I've never been happier! I know things go wrong, but I can't help to feel
that if something was going to go wrong it would have by now. Good luck to
you!

Sheree, although some do have problems after 1 year or further post-op,
most do not. Keep it in perspective before you get concerned. Some have
problems because they fail to follow the rules or take their vitamins or
keep up with their labwork. Others, like me, develop a pouch ulcer due to
medications taken. There are lots of reasons why complications or problems
can occur, but truthfully, that is a small minority. As to your friend who
said that people don't look good afterwards, have you seen the before and
after pics on this site?? I beg to differ!! And if he finds out about
your surgery and decides never to talk to you, doesn't sound like any great
loss to lose a judgemental person like this supposed friend.

I am now 15 months post op, -165#, and haven't really had any issues
beyond just learning to live with my new pouch for about the first year. I
feel great and thank God every day for this surgery. In fact, sometimes
life is so "normal" now that it scares me sometimes. I can eat
most anything I want. If you went to a restraunt with me, you would just
think I wasn't hungry enough to finish my plate, but you probably wouldn't
suspect I had WLS. I just eat like a normal person now. Feels good being
"normal", ya know? I suppose I -could- have complications further
down the road, but I am not going to worry about it. Even if my life is
ultimately shortened by something unforseen (which I doubt), the -quality-
of life I have now is SO much greater than what I had. Please don't let
this friend of yours scare you or drag you down. Enjoy your success, new
found energy, and find a zeal for living. That's the key. Every day is as
good as you make it, so make the most out of each moment.
Best ofluck!
