I am 4 months post-op, and was a diabetic on insulin before surgery, so I
never was a big sugar eater. Now after surgery I have eaten up to 4 grams
of sugar and not dumped. I have heard that some people can eat more sugar
than that and not dump, so you will probley be just fine on 1 grams of
sugar. If you look at the label that is probley 1 gram of sugar for a 1/2
cup, so if you eat less than 1/2 cup, you are getting hardly no sugar.

My doctor told me that if the label shows a serving has sugar in the double
digits, do not eat it! Nine grams of sugar per serving or less should be
safe for WLS patients.

Not everyone dumps on sugar (so far I haven't), but since I know this I
make a conscious effort to stay clear of foods with high sugar content.
Splenda has definately been a blessing for many of us.

Most docs have different opinions on this. You should check with yours to
see what his/her guidelines are. My surgeon's nurse told me to watch
eating more than 18g of sugar! And my son's doc's guideline is 12g or
less. Also, not everyone dumps, which can be a good or bad thing. I don't
and have found I can eat most sweet things as though I never had surgery.
However, just a little satisfies me now, where before, it took a great deal
(like half a bag of Hershey kisses!) LOL Now, 1 little Hershey kiss does
a great deal for me! I don't think you'll need to worry too much about 1
gram.

The question of how many grams of sugar should be eaten at a meal was asked
at one of my support group meetings. The nutritionist said no more than 23
gms at a meal. I know that it is a weird number but that is what she said.
My yogurt (4 ozs) that I eat has 18gms of sugar in it and I have no
problems dumping wise with it. 1gm of sugar is not a lot, you should not
have a problem with foods with the sugar content being so low.
