Question:
Are reduced fat Ritz crakcers....

I have found that I enjoy eating peanut butter spreaded on top of a reduce fat Ritz cracker is this a good thing? I do the peanut butter tryin to get the protein. Also a question about protein, some say your body has some in reserves, how long does it stay in reserves after your surgery. I'm 8 weeks post op, I know I dont get in much protein (maybe 15 grams if that) some say this will get better as time goes on, but I dont want my weight loss to cease because of this. I drink my water and other liquids, and I exercise faithfully (mainly do the walk away the pound tapes). Its the protein that I can't seem to do. When it comes to protein thats the ONLY time I regret the surgery. Should I feel this way?    — noweapon (posted on November 20, 2003)

Lisa, I think it's a fine thing to eat as long as you don't overdo. I do almost the same thing, in fact. I spread creamy peanut butter onto reduced fat triscuits. It's not something that I snack on all day, but use it as a meal or as an afternoon snack. I believe that anything is okay in moderation. As for your protein problem, I know exactly how you feel. I'm nine weeks post-op today, and I'm probably getting in about 40-50 grams of protein per day. I have found one little trick that helps me get in an extra 20 grams per day. I take no-sugar-added hot cocoa mix and add a scoop of unflavored protein powder and then mix it up with water. I can't tell a taste difference and I feel like the protein is hidden this way. Email me if you ever want to talk. We are pretty close in our journies. Best of luck to you! ~Kristy (lap rny 9/18/03 - 320/278/168)

Lisa- I really think you need to get your protein up. I am the worst at protein but know I have never been under 40 grams. The doctor reccomends 80-120 grams a day. Protein shakes and bars are a great source...I personally cant stand them and would sooner not eat. Some high protein snack choices would be cocktail shrimp 4=6 grams of protein and 30 cals! Egg whites (2) 7 grams. 4oz lowfat cottage cheese 12 grams protein. 6oz light yogurt 8 grams. salmon 1/4 cup 12 grams!! tuna 2 oz in water... 15 grams!! Be careful with the crackers I know I CRAVE salty snacks like that a TON now at 7 months because I ate them in moderation like that in the begining. To do it all over again I would limit my carbs better and not drink diet pop! My loss has been fine but, I am sure if I were to adhere to the "plan" I would be at goal or closer! Best of Luck- Lisa

Lisa K I can't eat all that food you named. The eggs make me gag, I dont eat cottage cheese. And when I do eat I make sure whatever it is...it has some protein in it. I dont eat alot of nothing. I do eat the tuna fish, I fix it with boiled egg, and splenda for sweetness. I love egg drop soup. I eat steaks, and one sausage link (the little ones) it dont take much to fill me up. I hope it gets better soon because I know the protein is needed!

Like what Kristy said, vitalady.com sells an unflavored protien powder. You can add it to just about everything and it will boost your protien tremendously. She also sells calcium in this form. If you are having a hard time getting it all from your foods, this is a big helper.

Lisa H- I totally understand where you are. I lived on Egg drop soup for the first 2 months! I also understand not being able to get much in! It will get better! I kinda wish I had stayed like that longer! :) LisaK 4/22/03 Lap RNY 5'6.5 252/168/145

If you mix your chocolate protein poder in with sugar free chocolate pudding it tastes like chocolate cake mix. ;) Also, whether your Ritz are fat free or not doesn't make a difference. It is the carbs. Eat Peanut butter off the spoon. Or better yet, put it in a blender with chocolate protein powder, 1/2 banana, 1 1/2 cups of water and 6 ice cubes. Yummy! MM

My surgeon suggested that we eat peanut butter on crackers but he wanted us to put a lot of peanut butter on it so we were getting more peanut butter than cracker. He also didn't have me start supplementing protein til I was three months post-op

Hey Lisa! Your body doesn't store protein like you may think...Not like it stores fat. The protein storage we do have is our muscles, and when we begin to break down our "stored protein" then we can begin going into ketosis. Which is not really what you want your body to do...You really want your body to burn the fat reserves, not muscles you have. That's why we are encouraged/told by the surgeon to eat a lot of protein as we don't store it for use later. HTH --->
