Question:

I am curious to find out if we, as post-ops, can safely take herbal supplements? Are there any that we should specifically stay away from (like if any mimic aspirin-like effects)? I have severe menstrual cramps and read that there are certain herbal supplements that can help regulate the female system and reduce cramping. I haven't taken any with the exception of Evening Primrose Oil (which by the way seems to have reduced my appetite). Any advice would be appreciated. — Nicole L. (posted on November 1, 2003)

I've taken some of the "natural" herbal-enhanced energy drinks.
I found that they caused significant cramping.

If black cohosh is one of the herbs you are considering, I have been taking
it for 6 months before surgery and right on through to this day. (13
months out) My lung specialist looked it up in his herb reference book,
and said he seen no problems with taking it.

To all...Please be careful with the herbals and run them by your Drs first.
Most are fine for MOST people, but I specifically remember my OBGYN
warning me from herbals while I was pregenant (preop). Some (like black
Kohash I believe) may seriously increase risk of miscarriage. They are
probaly fine, but like we all say here at this site, when in doubt, as the
Dr.

Try a Magnesium supplement. There are some actual studies that show that
taking Magnesium reduces menstual cramps. I know it works for me.
