Question:
What does a clear liquid diet consist of?
I need to be on a clear liquid diet 2 days before surgery. I'm planning to buy broth, jello, fruit juices, popsicles ... any other suggestions as to what would be good to include? Thank you for your help. — [Deactivated Member] (posted on October 31, 2003)

I was told not to eat anything red so as not to have it confused with blood
later on. There is also italian ice but other than that I think you have it
covered.

Mary, I would by broth, sugar-free popsicles, sugar free jello and 100
natural fruit juices. Don't buy a lot, since you won't have much appetite
after the surgery. Also if you buy the natural and sugar free things
before hand you can use them after surgery as well. ~Janine

I would check with your dr. before having fruit juice. I was not permitted
to have any thing with sugar. Buy sugar free popsicles (not juicebars). I
was also told that crystal light, and caffeine free coffee and tea were OK.
Your surgeon or nutritionist should be providing you with an approved
diet.

Jan, thanks for the warning about the fruit juices. I just called the
hospital and double checked with surgery scheduling (they handle our
pre-op). They told me they would call me next Friday and go over it all
with me. I pleaded for answers now ... the nurse was so nice and agreed.
I can have: water, clear gatorades, diet 7-up, chicken broth (no particles
in it), SF/FF popsicles, jello SF any flavor. She said Propel water should
be OK because it is clear and low in sugar (20 calories for the whole
bottle). Absolutley no fruit juices or milk products. I was really
counting on apple juice to get me thru, guess chicken broth will be my
"drink" of choice.
