I started to eat fairly normal at around 4wks... I skipped a whole stage in my Dr's plan but had it ok'd by him.. I didn't do liquids for the full 6 weeks.. About a week post-op I ate pureed foods.. By about 4 weeks, I could eat pretty much everything, as long as I chewed, chewed, chewed! And now at 7wks out my diet consist of soft/soild foods...

I started eating soft foods - egg salad, tuna salad, etc at 12 days. I slowly graduated up to more dense foods and at three weeks I was eating grilled pork chops. However, I did not eat bread or pizza for over a year. I still rarely eat half a sandwich and I can't tolerate pizza at all. I would stay away from the breads til I were near goal if I were you. I mostly eat grilled meats, seafood, veggies, fruit and cottage cheese.

At 7 months I can eat 'normal', though generally I don't choose breads, etc. I wasn't able to eat a piece of pizza for 6 months or so. I simply couldn't stomach the pizza dough. YUK! What a bad feeling. The topping though- that was great at 3 months. I do OK now, if I don't have more than one piece. Same for sliced bread. I stick to a pita or a wrap even now whenever possible- it feels much better than sliced bread. SO, there is probably no specific answer for you. Some people can handle it when their doc 'sets them loose' from the soft stages of the post op plan, others can't. It is 'safe' to try whenever your doc releases you from your restricted food plan- meaning you don't have to stick to soft foods. Good luck, and remember- NORMAL as a post op- is not always what it used to be. It's all for the best.

By month 2, you should be able to eat normal. For some it may take a little longer and of course for some a little less. The more time that goes by, the easier it gets!

My perception of "normal" has had to change dramatically since surgery. I am very capable of eating pizza or bread now but have to choose not to on any kind of regular basis. I find that carbs go down too easy with no ill effects other than they halt my weight loss. To me that is plenty of ill effect but does not stop everybody from indulging. I would stay away from that stuff for as long as you can and try to incorporate new foods (protein) into your diet until that feels "normal".
