Question:
Distal RNY here.... losing too much weight?

I'm 5'7" and preop was 260. I'm 7 months post-op and am down 92 lbs to 168. I would like to stay at this weight but it seems no matter what or how much I eat, I'm still losing. I just got back from Hawaii and found myself slipping into the old habits. Ate chocolate covered macadamia nuts (which I promised myself I wouldn't do this time) and drank Mai Tai's and DID NOT dump. Bottom line, after eating everything and anything I wanted (yes, I'm embarassed), I still lost 1 pound during the week. I'm concerned. Would this have anything to do with being distal? Thanks for your comments and help.    — Vicki S. (posted on October 19, 2003)

You are right on track , most of us lose the greatest amount of weight in the first 6 months! It took me 8 months and 1 week to lose 100 pounds, i started at 238 and am 5'3" then my weight slowed down and i could eat anything too but.....that will put it back on if you are not careful after your body levels out , mine leveled at 10 months and you are to have a slight regain of about 10 pounds or so so follow the rules you are doing ok and if you go to your doctor for your follow up visits let him tell you if you are losing too much, but stop the junk food now or it will haunt you later

How in the world did you get approved with less than 100 lbs to lose?? Curious... Anyway, you may lose more, and then rebound some. Be careful... it can happen faster than you think!! One of th ethings you can do to slow weight loss is to start adding carbs to your diet -- not candy, etc., but healthy carbs like pasta, whole grain breads, etc. Be cautious.

You're not done, is all. You could get down as low as 130 or so and look fabulous, still be safe. But if you prefer yourself more rounded, you may bounce back to a comfy wt. I've not seen proximals STAY too skinny if eating properly. Trying to stop your wt loss could result in it going back UP. Better to let it come to a halt, then adjust. Hard to adjust it while it's still moving.

Sharon, she didn't say she had less than 100 pounds to lose, just that she has lost 92 so far and feels comfy at that weight. Her pre-op BMI calculates to 40.7, which would be more than enough for most insurance companies, esp. if she had any co-morbids. Her current BMI is 25.4, still slightly overweight. <p> For the OP, I am also 5'7" and weigh 160-164. I'm comfy at this weight, but after I have my baby (currently 10 weeks along) I want to eventually get to 150 or so. I mainly go by clothing size and currently I am in a 12, but would love to be an 8.

10/20/03 I am also 5'7", I'm 2 yrs postop (9/6/01), and down 151 lbs. I currently weigh 146.5 lbs. I leveled off at about 150-155 lbs at around 18 months, (size 10ish). Now I am losing again at around 1 lb a month, (I know that isn't much), but I'm losing inches again. Believe me it isn't from not eating enough!!!! And I am not purposely taking in low calorie amts, I eat more than or even double, all the postops I know or work with. I even eat candy or ice cream on a regular basis each week, (near my period it's every day!). I am down into a size 8/small. I would like to weigh 140 lbs, but don't want to go any lower. I almost never dump at all if I eat carbs or sugars either. All my labs are in normal range. I inject Vit B12 2x per month as well as sublingual, take vitamins, supplements, etc. I drink a quart of skim milk most days towards my protein intake of 70 per day. I only do mild exercise, walking 5 days a week for 30-40 mins or so. (I know I should do more, with Lupus & fibromyalgia sometimes it hurts too much to do more.) I wonder if the weight loss will quit also. My md's aren't too concerned yet as I am in the mid range for my height. (I guess the weight range for this height is 138 to 155 lbs)So I guess you can still lose weight even if you're eating lots of stuff based on your metabolism. Why wasn't it this easy to lose when I was fat?? Why does this tendency show up now? I think our bodies change is so many ways that its impossible to know what is going to happen until you do the surgery & go through it. Maybe you'll be like me and "get away" with eating stuff others might not be able to. Please don't feel offended if this is greatly different from your experience, I am not trying to boast at all, just give my story. I have friends who have troubles with how this has worked for me and they still have lbs to lose but it's not budging. Our bodies are all so very different!!!! The more I read the posts, the more I see how very different all our bodies are. Just keep in close touch with your md's & eat properly and let your body balance out as it chooses. As other posts wisely stated, to finish loosing and then get to your baseline and make adjustments then. Good Luck. karen
