Question:
I am just a little over 5 weeks post op. I have been noticing
pain in my ribs and mid-back? Anyone else have this problem? What kind of meds can I take to help alleviate the pain/discomfort? Thanks so much, Lisa — Lisa D. (posted on October 17, 2003)

I found that seeing a chiropractor and getting a massage was way more
helpful than any pill on the market. At the least you could ask your doc
for a muscle relaxer.

Lisa, I'm 4 weeks out and the same thing was going on with me. My back and
the left side rib area hurt. I was told that it was most likely my body
getting used to carrying my weight differently. I was using muscles that I
had not used prior to surgery. I also felt like I was
"protecting" my incision area and maybe compensating for my
abdomen muscles that were still tender with my back muscles. Hope that
helps! Best to you!

It is probably just pains from the healing inside your body, but, you
should probably mention it to your sutgeon. I had steady pains in my ribs
and back. I was given and ultrasound and they found gallstones. I had my
gallbladder removed only to still have the pain. Final;ly, we found out it
was an ulcer. Probably caused by an irritation form a staple inside me.
Any way, the doctor put me on Prevacid to keep the acid out of it and it
healed nicely. No more pain. The moral of my story is, it is always better
to tell your doctor. Good luck.
