Question:
Did anyone have toradol IV instead of morphine?
I am going to talk to my surgeon about alternative pain meds after surgery cause of a history of bad panic attacks. I am determined not to have morphine!!!I would like to hear from people that used toradol and the effect it had on them. — natalie J. (posted on October 14, 2003)

Hi I had my surgery about 8 1/2 mths ago and I had a morphine pump in the
hospital after surgery for the first day or so then I had liquid lortab
after that, but I have heard of other people who had toradol afterwards and
that worked great too, so defenitely ask your doc of what your options are.
And, good luck with your surgery!

I can't tolerate morphine, it makes me VERY sick. They have plenty of
alternatives, I just don't know their names. Just let your doctors know, it
won't be a problem.

We had a morphine pump and they gave us shots of Toradol in our IV, I was
very comfortable, never had any pain.

I have had Toradol by IV in the past for chronic migraines, and it did not
do much for the pain. And it made me incredibly sick. Just my experience...

I had both toridol and morphine in the hospital. They also tried to change
my morphine (because I ended up npo for another day) to dilatin and we will
never do that again!!! Anyway talk to your surgeon about alternatives.

I had toradol and demerol. My surgeon prefers demerol to morphine and
frankly, I think it controls the pain better. Toradol is great but you can
have only limited amounts of it as it has some serious side effects. I had
toradol 4 times a day for 24 hours. Then, three days post-op, I was put
back on it twice a day because I had injured my knee and they wanted me to
have the anti0inflammatory agent in toradol. I have read that it can be a
quite dangerous drug if over used.

I had a Morphine PCA pump after surgery and that was removed the next day.
I was then started on Toradol IV push every 6 hours until for the next day.
First of all, you need to discuss your probelm with morphine with your
surgeon (and anesthesiologist). Does it make you sick? Usually morphine is
used because it helps to relieve anxiety. (That's why it is the drug of
choice for someone who is having chest pain.) If it works differently for
you, let the surgeon know. There are many other durgs that can be used to
relieve post operative pain besides morphine demerol and toradol. Plus they
may give you something else to help prevent a panic attack before surgery.

They gave me Toradol after my surgery. But apparently it is closely related
to Asperin... which I am allergic to. It caused me to bleed alot more and
then I had to be given 2 units of blood. My Dr. told me to NEVER take
Toradol again.

Morphine makes me sick, so I specifically asked not to be given it. I was
given a Demerol PCA and a dose of Tordal every 6 hours. It was great and I
was not a zombie.

I had been given morphine in a pump 10 years ago for a non WLS surgery. I
got really sick from it. I had them put on an allergy bracelet so I
wouldn't be given it for my WLS. I wanted demerol, but my hospital didn't
do it in IV's, so I had delauded??, and a few demerol shots. I had been
given toradol for other situations and it worked great, but as others have
mentioned, it is an anti inflammatory analgesic like aspirin and would
probably aggravate your pouch. It was however, a miracle when my husband
was suffering from kidney stones.

I had dilaudid AND toradol. I developed a stricture about 12 hours after
surgery and was in a lot of pain. I had dilaudid in my PCA and toradol was
injected through my IV every 4-6 hours (sometimes the nurses waited to give
it to me if I was asleep).
