Question:
Where can I find yummy whole grain/ no sugar recipes?

Since surgery, I've turned into a health nut, and am intent on bringing my family along for the ride, especially my children. I've replaced white flour and white sugar in my baking with whole grains and natural sweeteners like brown rice syrup or fruit sweetener. I try to stay away from overly processed or artificial foods. I've found a few healthy recipes for treats for the kids, but am looking for more. Can anyone recommend some good books or sites for whole grain, no sugar, healthy recipes that my kids will like too? I can find "no sugar" recipes, but they often use artificial sweetener and/or white flour. Thanks!    — mom2jtx3 (posted on October 2, 2003)

A really good cook book (if your interested) is Sweet and Natural that uses natural sweeteners and whole grains in desserts...is available at http://www.imss.macrobiotic.net/recipeMonth.html there is also a few recipes there of the same genre. These recipes have no 'sugar' or artificial sweeteners, milk, butter, eggs, gelatin, or cornstarch. ALSO if you go to google and type in 'whole grain natural sweetener recipe' you'll pull up a whole plithora of recipes of that ilk. Good luck!

Okay, we are kind of strange around here...but, when our first child was born we decided that they would not have ANY sugar until they turned five, when they had their first piece of birthday cake. And, believe it or not, it worked! My kids still like sweets (well, except the boy) but also love foods that are good for them. Like today for lunch they are having cucumber and tomatoe sandwiches with blue cheese dressing...one of their favorites! As a matter of fact, we always get comments from people about how willing to 'eat anything' our kids are. Anyway, someone gave me this bood called Sugar Free Toddlers by Susan Watson and we have tried, and liked, several of the recipes in the book. It uses wheat flour (and sometimes part unbleached white), wheat germ/oat bran, fruits, veggies or fruit juices in every recipe. Our favorite is the applesauce raisin muffins that we add dried apple and carrots to. Another thing, that we personally don't do...but would like to, is making our own bread. My aunt has a wheat mill and a mega mixer and turns out 6 loaves of whole wheat bread in 1/2 of an hour + bake time. Good luck on your health quest! You will never regret setting a good example for your children.

I bake mostly with fructose or turbinado sugar and buy most of my baking products at Whole Foods. I have a recipe book if you are interested. You can click on my profile page or visit www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny At the website, you'll find an index, sample recipes and ordering information. Are you looking for any specific recipe?
