Question:
Which takes

My doctor said he is going to "take less intestines" on my RNY procedure; however, he didn't use the terms distal or proximal. Which is the correct term for the less dramatic intestinal removal?    — Amy J. (posted on September 22, 2003)

Your doctor is probably meaning proximal, but it's been to have his clarification so you know exactly.

Do ask your doctor how many centimeters of your small intestine he is going to bypass. That's the only way to get the right answer. And, the intestines are not removed; they are bypassed. Your intestines and the old part of your stomach are still there and functioning, and contributing digestive juices to the process, it's just that food no longer travels in that part of the digestive system.
