Question:
My insurance said they won't pay for complictions due to the surgery...
I would assume this is a complication, and I would be responsible to pay for it. What does a procedure like this cost and would the Dr. that performs my surgery do this in his office, or would I have to see another Dr.? — D. K. (posted on September 19, 2003)

I meant dialation as a procedure, and is that the same thing as a
stricture? I have read a few things about strictures, but nothing
definitive.

I do not think they would have a leg to stand on as you literally would die
if you had a stricture and were not dilated. You would not be able to eat
or drink. I think they may mean something else but not sure. I would not
left my insurance get away with it, that's for sure. The total cost of a
scoping at the hospital I had surgery at (Neenah WI) is about $2200-2600
with hospital, anesthesia and surgeon's fees.

Doesn't matter what procedure you need - whether it's life threatening or
not. IF they have turned down your surgery (WLS) and you self-pay and then
have complications, generally they can (and often do) turn you down for any
complication that they can link back to that denied surgery for one year.
After that, they generally do cover complications because it's too hard to
trace it to a direct source. I wish you the best of luck!

Just an interesting side note to this question. I was a self-pay, but my
insurance company covered a compliction I had after surgery. They paid the
extra 6 days in the hospital and have paid for all my follow up care.
