Question:
What to look forin a protien drink & bar

Can someone tell me what to look for in a protein drink & bar? Like what is a fair amount of protein/carbs...the correct type of protein we can absorb? I guess I'm confused! Thanks    — Vicki V. (posted on September 6, 2003)

Try problend 55 from gnc. It tastes like a chocolate malt. With a slight aftertaste that isnt too bad:) Its whey protein which is the best for us, then soy protein is next. Be watchful of 'partially digested proteins' which are allegedly easier for us to absorb, but to 'partially digest' the protein they add some kind of acid which is not good for us for some reason. Anyone know why? Vicki, I think you're not far enoguh out for protein bars:)jmho!

On my profile there is an article I wrote about what an impact carb is vs. total carbs, vs. non-impact carbs. Worth the read... Now, when you look for a protein bar or a protein shake, you look for the lowest amount of calories, with low as possible fat, fewer than 2 grams of sugars and low as possible carbs. The higher the protein, the better, and we absorb whey protein, soy protein and rice protein. Soy protein does have plant estrogens in it, so if you are sensitive to estrogens, try to avoid soy. I did some reviews on protein shakes and bars, you might look at those and compare to other protein shakes and bars. We can't absorb a LOT of protein all at once, so taking in 30+ grams at one time is kind of useless... The bars I eat have only 4 carbs and 20 grams of protein with less than 1/2 gram of fat -- And it's a good tasting bar. Does any of this help?? Feel free to email me if you are still confused! :~) Hugs...

In a drink, 30g protein when made with water, less than 6g sugar. If the protein advertises itself as 50g or 55g, just use one scoop to get the 30g, as any more is a waste of $$$. In bars, less than 6g per bar is ideal. The amount of protein will vary by bar size, but 30g would be nice. Although 15g protein for 3g sugar is nice, too in a small bar.
